I've been reading crap reviews of Bracelands and Christchurch - are tehy that bad? Anywhere thats better? Ideally with EHU as I'm thinking of October half term.

Though ehu not essential as I'll probably have a stove by then. But it'll be nice to be able to charge my ipad up so I can MN in the evenings. Grin

You can camp at the YHA there which has huge grounds and is very lovely. Right on the river.

I was wondering similar. My daughter's singing at Gloucester cathedral for a weekend in July, and we were wondering if we could get away with camping in the Forest of Dean and driving her in to Gloucester each day. Nicer camping for us, I thought?

Or- where would you camp to be near to Gloucester?

pigsinmud · 14/05/2012 13:47

I also need a campsite near Gloucester in August as ds2 going on a music course! We wondered the same thing about travelling from Forest of Dean.

VivaLeBeaver · 14/05/2012 13:57

Thanks, the YHA looks nice. Are you allowed to use their self catering kitchens there?

Yes, am pretty sure that campers can use all the facilities. (Except the bedrooms of course!)

White mead forest park

Haven't been for a few years but used to love Bracelands. It can get boggy/flooded in patches around the edge, but was a beautiful site, good facilities etc. We stopped going when taken over by Forest Holidays and the prices became extortionate. Have not looked at prices recently, but I would go back.

CHristchurch always seemed very overcrowded to me though.

I second IDontDoIroning with Whitemead. The nicest campsite I've been to I think, the facilites are lovely.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 14/05/2012 22:15

Whitemead is lovely, but don't you need to be a Csma member to go?

Doormouse · 15/05/2012 11:02

How about Greenway Farm? www.greenwayfarm.moonfruit.com
About 15 mins away from Ross-on-wye, 15 miles to Gloucester, and close to all the lovely stuff within the Forest.....

VivaLeBeaver · 15/05/2012 17:24

Thanks, Greenway Farm looks lovely as well. I'm now toying with the idea of staying in the actual YH or the glamping pod at Greenways instead of camping. Oct might be a bit cool for camping....

Glad to help. With luck, the weather in Ocober may well be better (and warmer) than now Grin
(Have just returned from a very lovely but slightly chilly at night weekend in Herefordshire).
There are quite a few independently run campsites within the Forest of dean area, many of which I'd love to stay at if they weren't quite so close to home!
You could also look at www.greenacrescampsite.co.uk/ or www.woodlandsviewcaravanpark.co.uk/ depending on your requirements. Both are close to Coleford, Monmouth and the Wye Valley. I have to agree with you about the Glamping pod or YH though, if only for guaranteed warm shelter.
I have to say that I haven't stayed at any of these sites personally, although I have had a nose around the facilities at Greenways (they're lovely) and I'm pretty sure they allow firelogs to be burnt in BBQ's or firepts for that late season toe-toasting warmth!

IDontDoIroning · 15/05/2012 21:35

Re whitemead forest park - No the CSMA relaxed their rules a few years ago, so you don't have to be a member to stay there.

Also it's much easier to join now so if you join its quite cheap and you get a discount and other offers etc.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 15/05/2012 21:57

Thanks for that, we always go with friends who are members but it's handy to know.
