I am happy to live out of bags but my OH insists on a stupid wardrobe. Am thinking of other ideas as dont want to spend money on wardrobe.

I can't imagine spending money on a special camping wardrobe, and we do a lot of camping and glamping,

We find the big morrison's(other supermarket available) bags for life brilliant for all camping needs, and they only cost about 50p each, they fit quite a bit in, are fairly waterproof,

when we are camping where your car is alongside, I pack straight into the bags, and they stack neatly in tent.

hpsaucy · 13/05/2012 21:58

I use plastic storage boxes with lids.

MrsMc82 · 13/05/2012 22:46

I use a huge blue ikea bag or two.....

Lovecat · 13/05/2012 23:50

Have done it 3 ways, still not sure which is best...

  1. fill cushion covers (I am a glamper) with clothes. This saves space in the car but is a PITA when camping more than a 2-night weekend as you end up with the issue of where to put the dirty clothes, plus your naice cushions get lumpier and less comfy as clothes are worn/stuffed back inside...

  2. get 1 per person of those cheapy pop up storage things (like this, 50p-99p in our local pound shops) and use them as storage inside the tent - this doesn't help where you put the clothes when travelling to n' from, though.

  3. big shopping bags as above but then put the clothes into a cupboard that doubles as a table/worksurface inside the tent (this only when staying a week or more as it is a faff to put it up/down for short term camping)

We have a bell tent; unless things are stored tidily then the place quickly becomes a tip, so the cupboard, though a wee bit bulky, is a godsend for longer stays.

However, we've also just bought a zonkpad bed, and it has room underneath to put bags/suitcases out of the way, so that may well be the way forward for us. We have 2 weeks in France coming up so we shall see... :)

I use the underbed storage boxes with lids - they fit under the bed in our van.

Bag in the roofbox. Get clean pants out the night before. Luxuriate in non-clothing storage solution space.

Lucycat · 14/05/2012 16:48

We have 4 of this type of thing one for each of us that just pile up on top of each other but keep stuff separate when at a site for a while. It also stops me trying to wear the dd's knickers Smile

ChippyMinton · 14/05/2012 17:23

Clean clothes? Surely only clean pants are needed? And a spare pair of socks? Maybe a t shirt?

Or is that just my skanky eco-friendly kids?

Slubberdegullion · 14/05/2012 17:26

It's mostly pants here Chippy.

bibbitybobbitybunny · 14/05/2012 17:27

I keep them in a suitcase in the boot of the car.

Slubberdegullion · 14/05/2012 18:14

Sometimes I just keep my clean pants under my large technical hat. Thus they remain neatly stored away from the tent and also slightly warmed.

ChippyMinton · 14/05/2012 18:29

Good to know that we are not the only ones who travel lite Slubbers. If I wore a hat I might try your method.

BTW I tried the 'pyjamas on underneath regular clothes at dusk' trick last weekend, and it works like a charm to reduce bedtime chilliness.

Another way to avoid the need for a wardrobe is to camp in a hot country. This is my packing list for south of France:

bikini
pants
shorts
2 quick dry t shirts
sun cream

Slubberdegullion · 14/05/2012 18:31

or at the start of the holiday you could just wear all your clothes and then when the outer layers got dirty you could strip them off and throw them away, or shove them under the sig to reduce cold coming up through the floor.

yy to camping in Forrin to reduce packing list.

Slubberdegullion · 14/05/2012 18:34

or go camping at a naturist site.

so many helpful solutions without needing to buy any more camping paraphernalia.

ChippyMinton · 14/05/2012 18:46

I do like Lovecat's glamping cushion idea. I have a couple of stuff sacs with fleecy lining, which work as pillows if you turn them inside out and stuff with clothes.

Slubber - with pants it surely works the opposite way - remove the inner pair each day to reveal a fresh gusset pair.

Slubberdegullion · 14/05/2012 19:08

cushions schmushions

yy with clothes you work from the outside in and with pants work from the inside out. There is some jiggery pokery with getting undresssed but if you time it right dh gets to see your momentary nakedness which pretty much ticks the 'marital congress' box while camping.

Whoopydofoxpoo · 14/05/2012 19:17

We live out of our bags - only problem is that when we take the dog she rummages round the bags looking for socks to run off sleep with !

Lovecat · 14/05/2012 22:06

Don't leave a bag full of clothes anywhere near your lidded bucket.

That's all I'm saying. Confused

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 14/05/2012 22:13

Our tent has got a built in wardrobe with a hanging rail, so we use a couple of these to keep things out of the way. Anything that isn't in there stays I the bag on the floor of the built in wardrobe.

Quenelle · 15/05/2012 10:15

We will keep ours in the big holdall that in my imagination will fit perfectly inside the roofbox we're borrowing, but which I haven't actually seen yet. There will be enough room for the holdall in our huge bedroom. I'm going to get one of those pop up laundry baskets for dirty clothes and vacuum pack them for the return journey.

Must get round to actually testing the holdall/roofbox theory before our morning of departure. Could help to avoid a very quiet row on our drive at 6am on a Sunday morning.

signet2012 · 20/05/2012 21:20

We just use a holdall. Keep it zipped up inside the bed part of the tent.

I also take a black bag for putting dirty clothes in which can just be flung in the holdall at end of the holiday.

I went for 3 nights last summer and took

3 knickers (used)
2 jeans (used pair i went in all weekend)
2 tops (used 1)
hoodie 9lived in and slept in)
1 bra (kept on one i already had on)
socks x 3 (used)
joggers (slept in)
t shirt slept in and wore through last day
toiletries (toothpaste toothbrush shower gel brush shampoo conditioner make up cream) didnt use shampoo conditioner or make up or cream
fleece didnt wear
coat sat on
towel. used twice

DP took about the same and used even less than I did!

next time will pack less!
