Best sleeping bag for 2 year old for June camping trip?

After a particularly chilly trial run of our new bell tent at the end of April (without DS) I am getting a bit concerned about how to make sure he is warm enough when we go on our long trip at the end of June.

I realise June is usually warmer than April Grin but I know it can still get cold especially on a clear night so I would be very grateful for any suggestions!

FYI - my intention is to put him in fleecy all in one, gro-bag and then sleeping bag....unless it is really warm of course! (here's hoping..)

We take 2yo DS camping quite a lot March-September and have never had to put anything more than a long-sleeve vest, pyjamas, 2.5 tog Grobag and a fleecy blanket on him. I think a proper sleeping bag might be overkill :)

I think the most important thing is to make sure that he is properly insulated from the ground. DS has an air mattress and we always bring two fleecy blankets - one to double-fold and put between the mattress and the groundsheet and another to put between the mattress and DS.

I have seen baby sleeping bags e.g. this Vango one but if you're going to get one I would triple-check the dimensions first.

Hi, I got one of these for DD, well the pink one, and it's really good. Last year we went camping several times (she was 2) and it was cool at night but she just wore brushed cotton pyjamas and the sleeping bag and was toasty.

She also had this mattress which I padded out with fleece blankets, like AKMD has suggested.

I guess the main thing is just to have plenty of layers to hand so you can add/remove depending on the weather.

On a cold night, I have always found popping the small DC into my sleeping bag keeps me warm!

We bought a toddler readybed for DS when he was 2 (good value too, as he still fits in it with room to spare at 4). We do what AKMD and jenny suggest - a fleece blanket under the readybed, then one over the top. He just wore a vest, nappy and cotton pyjamas with socks and was lovely and warm. We camped in July, but as you say clear nights get cold.

I would recommend a junior sleeping bag - the ones with a zip on/off section at the bottom to make them shorter. we also used to stuff the bottom of the bag with clothes/blanket, just so that there wasn't too much empty space to be heated.
We also put the picnic blankets with the reflective foil backing under our self inflating mats to stop the chill coming through.
DD nearly always used to wriggle out of the bag as she was too warm!

Ds2 was 2 - he wears cotton PJs + socks + fleecy suit. I'd bought him an adult sleeping bag in the sale for when he was older and of course he wanted to use it to be like Big Brother Ds1. He's always been fine in it..we use a SIM underneath...used to migrate round the tent like a squiggly caterpillar in the night, though. He's 5 now and a bit less mobile. It saved buying a special sleeping bag, anyway.
