Portable Charger?

I'm camping in July for a week at a site that doesn't have ehu Shock
I actually don't mind that but what I will mind is not being able to charge up my smartphone to mumsnet. Dh is dropping us off and taking the car so I won't be able to use an in-car charger and I won't have access to a USB socket so won't be able to use one of those chargers. I've been looking at solar chargers but they seem to get mixed reviews. I also don't want to spend a lot of money (£20-25 max). Any suggestions or recommendations?

We have a battery one from eBay. Did not cost much and you get about 2 charges from 2 aa batteries.

Just search eBay for one for your make of phone. They are often called festival chargers

Thanks - I'll have a look :)

I've been wondering this - My cigarette lighter no longer works which is annoying - the only thing we use it for is inflating airbeds and charging phones.

I was looking about buying the veho pebble which is like an extra battery

Thought it actually might work better than a solar panel considering the British weather.

I was looking at that kat do you know anyone with one? Some reviews say they are fantastic others say they don't work at all. Dh has started looking at leisure batteries which seem expensive and excessive for charging phoneHmm

I have only met one person with one and she said it was great but I am not sure which model

I tried a solar charger last year, was crap, wouldn't even provide enough charge to turn the phone on. Am also looking for a charger for camp bestival, as my phone goes flat really quickly. Are wind up ones any good?

scrappydappydoo · 05/05/2012 17:21

I would have thought wind up ones would end being a real pain - too much effort Grin.
I'm now looking at this

I bought a solar one last year, did not test it properly before going and found it didn't actually work with an iPhone! Apparently I need another piece to use it with an iPhone which makes it much more expensive.

Grockle · 06/05/2012 21:41

That looks good, scrappy

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 06/05/2012 21:47

it needs another thing, doesn't it? costing £30?

ifeelloved · 06/05/2012 23:53

I have a solar one, can't really recommend it unless you are going to be in string sunlight. It does work, but as I say, it needs sunlight rather than just day light

scrappydappydoo · 07/05/2012 08:22

I don't think so... you can buy a rechargable unit that plugs into a car charger or normal outlet but i think it runs stand alone on D size batteries.

I bought the power gorilla and power monkey last year and they are totally shit - v expensive, heavy and the connectors don't connect

Then I bought a little battery one in japan ( you can get them on eBay - iPhone battery portable or travel charger) and they're v handy and work well - just take a spare set of batteries too.
