Having had 2 useless lanterns from the camping shop I just searched mn recommendations & 1 thread suggested fairy lights. Sounds like a good, cheap option. Any thoughts?

For finding your tent and general pimping up your tent... Or for actual lighting to see and do things by?
If for the latter... Then I would say no. They aren't that bright.

we have led camping lights. very bright and the batteries last for ages. small enough to take to the shower block.

Thanks both of you. I need to be able to have some light but dcs have torches for reading etc. I think the poster meant she had used them in place of a lantern, not just to be pretty. I should have said they were solar powered which I thought could make good sense. I have read wind up/battery lanterns don't last long enough & the 2 I had were not that cheap & simply didn't work at all! Need to get something to use, any recommendations on lanterns?

Ooo, I have solar fairy lights, they are great for providing enough light to see by and for finding your tent, and you don't need to turn them off, they fade automatically. However, if its not been a sunny day, they can not be very bright or fade quite quickly. Make sure you leave the solar panel out the day before you go so they cahrge up. We also have a gas lantern and led headlights for reading.
The gas lantern provides a nice warm glow and a bit of heat, makes a cosy atmosphere, not sure I'll be using it this year though in the little tent.

You've just reminded me that I actually need to put new little tent up and work out the fixings for the fairy lights. :)

Thanks thrifty that sounds encouraging. Am hoping there'll be enough sun, we're off to France Grin amongst other little trips if I can rally enthusiasmHmm

Make sure you place the solar panel in a sunny spot not on the shady side of your tent :)
