Campsite with campfire recommendations

I went to Fisherground in Eskdale last summer and had a blast what with the kids play area and the campfire every night I want to repeat the experience.
I don't want to do Fisherground again as the owner were just a bit too 'on the ball' with keeping to the rules, so is there anywhere that anyone would recommend with a good vibe, campfires and something for kids to do. We are much more camping without clubhouses types, therefore even if it is just a steam for ds to do.
I don't mind traveling for about four hours and are based in the north east.

fantastic views we stayed at this one a few years and loved it. Certainly no clubhouses etc. The evening entertainment is sitting outside your tent watching the seals etc, and even the odd dolphin passes by.

AHHH just read the recent reviews... um , we went summer 2010 and didn't have any problems...

MrsMc82 · 22/04/2012 09:51

Said it before (so may sound a wee bit obsessed!) but I love Red Bank farm at bolton-le-sands. www.redbankfarm.co.uk no too much of a trek either for you

Heifer · 22/04/2012 09:58

that does look good MrsMC82, I've saved that as a favourite, may give it a go this year, decent price too.

It doesn't mention campfires, does it allow them?

MrsMc82 · 22/04/2012 10:13

def recommend it Heifer, campfires are allowed so log as you only use the compressed logs they sell, which is a bit cheeky but for the price of the site I don't mind too much....... the free mini petting farm was brilliant or 2yo ds too!

MrsMc82 · 22/04/2012 10:26

ooooo have had Cae Du on my to do list for ages..... not too sure now, wonder if its a case of people will find anything to complain about like trip advisor is Confused ...............

MrsMc82 · 22/04/2012 10:32

Heifer just thought of How Stean www.howstean.co.uk/camping which isn't too far from us at all (we're Harrogate) - not actually stayed we've eaten at the cafe many times tho over the years - we were going to camp at new year but had flu - anyway my cousin lives in the village and knows the bloke who runs it well (they play n a brass band together! Confused )and we know him a little, so i imagine that he runs it fairly well but its pretty basic!..... and campfires allowed!! (hmmm v rambly post sorry!!)

The CampsiteUK site has a specialist search list for sites which allow fires, area by area. You have to keep scrolling down, european sections crop up in the middle of the UK areas. [[http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/articles/view.asp?id=4 here]

TooManyOddSocks · 22/04/2012 17:02

breck farm in Norfolk is lovely.

hillbilly · 22/04/2012 21:02

Hi TooMany - please tell me what you like about Breck Farm. We are going in June but I heard at least 1 bad review on here. We love a campfire so it won over High Sand Creek.

nothinginthefridge · 22/04/2012 23:11

Just wanted to say hi first, as I've not posted on the camping forum before.

I would recommend www.fforestfields.co.uk It's near Builth Wells (just above Hereford I think) Sorry geography is not a strong point.

It's a site that allows campfires. It also has a boating lake with a jetty and some kayaks and lifejackets that you can borrow as long as you put some money in the charity box.

They don't have a shop, but a fridge stacked with bacon, eggs, sausage, milk, yoghurts etc. The price is on the outside of the fridge, and you just put the money in the honesty box. They never over fill the site, so you have lots of space around your pitch.

No playground, but our kids (15,12 &10) have never complained about that.

Just to give you an idea of how lovely it is, it's booked up for Jubilee weekend, with, last I heard about 6 weeks ago, 20 families on the waiting list.

muchostinky · 23/04/2012 00:16

We are going to Fforest fields for the whole of that jubilee week - glad that I booked early now!

membrillo · 23/04/2012 00:24

We went to Uffington last year, in South Oxfordshire, and it was lovely. You do need a fire bucket though (well- any bucket really, just one that can take water to be on stand-by) and we didn't have one with us, so we had to do without. Not that it really mattered, as we were all in bed by 8pm anyway! Grin

Eweleaze in Dorset also good, but only open in August.

fatzak · 23/04/2012 09:22

We went to aberafon last June and are going back again this summer. Whilst you can't have a fire around your tent, everyone heads down to the beach at sunset and lights fires which is fab. Had one of my favourite camping evenings last summer with a fire, wine, someone playing the guitar.. aah, bliss!!

TooManyOddSocks · 23/04/2012 09:34

hillbillly I have enjoyed staying at Breck Farm. The owners are lovely, you can have campfires, you can pitch your tent where you want, there are woods for the DC to play in and I have always found the other campers considerate and friendly. Plus you are close to some beasutiful beaches Smile
One "downside" (that I have seen mentioned on reviews) is the shower block. They had a new block built a couple of years ago but no, it isn't great. There are still improvements they could make with it. I haven't been there when all showers were working, and there aren't enough sinks to accomodate people who want to dry and straighten their hair with people who just want to wash and brush their teeth. So they could have made that area bigger to accomodate more. But that doesn't bother me, it might bother someone else.
Am definitely going to camp at some of the places people have linked to on here - they look great. Smile

nothinginthefridge · 23/04/2012 20:33

muchostinky - we'll be there the whole week as well. Apparently they are planning some sort of party for the Jubilee (and I presume the grand opening of the new toilet block), but they are keeping very hush about what it is.

A hog roast was suggested so I'm hoping for that! Grin

muchostinky · 23/04/2012 21:01

nothinginthefridge cool, we will have to do some kind of Mumsnet wave or flag so that we know who each other are!

Am looking forward to it not been there before, am a fan on Facebook so keep seeing pictures of the toilet block being built.

Hog roast would be lovely! My other half is one of those skinny things who can eat anything though - so he could eat the whole hog himself. :)

MissGreatBritain · 23/04/2012 21:05

Ooh a Mumsnet secret sign - that would be fantastic! What could we do? (shameless thread hijack)

PS Park Farm at Swanton Morley, Norfolk is allowing campfires from this year.

nothinginthefridge · 24/04/2012 11:17

are you there too missgreatbritain?

I'll be the one who already looks like they've eaten the whole hog themselves Blush
