So I'm slowly putting together my lightweightish camping gear for festival/short trips. I need a lightweight, packs up small but stable burner, there are loads to choose from, but which is best?
Oh, and any recommendations for necessities that i may have forgotten :)

Oh, and does anyone have any experience of the gelert ascent ii cookset?

We have an MSR whisper lite from Go Outdoors. It is very efficient and cooks very quickly. Dh has to light it though as I get scared as it is petrol, but think that is just me!

Also look at trangia, they always get good reviews

We have the hi-gear Inferno. Got it from Go Outdoors. It folds tiny, but is very stable in use and has wide pot stands, but also narrow enough for small coffee pot. I bought it specifically for use with an outback oven, but it gets used all the time now.

Thanks for coming back to me.
Kalua, I don't fancy petrol, for some reason. It's not a rational reason, but I kinda know where I am with gas, but thanks.
I like the look of the hi gear one, I see it sits on the floor instead of on the canister? How does it connect, does it have ignition? I can't find it on go outdoors, but there's a fishing shop with one for 20quid, does that seem about right?

I LOVE my primus gravity stove - its fantabulous for cooking stuff quickly on, v powerful for something so tiny, fold into its own stuffsac.....
It is pricey but I got for free as my dad won it in competition in an ourdoors magazine!!! :)

thrifty · 21/04/2012 23:26

Mrsmc, it looks good, very similar to the hi gear one, but at 60quid its a bit dear, something like that only cheaper :)

Can't seem to find the hi gear one though, maybe they've stoped making it.

Just looked on G.O. and found this one m.gooutdoors.co.uk/sunnflair-alpine-stove-p141905 which looks almost identical for a third of the price :)

thrifty · 22/04/2012 09:51

Thanks :) found the hi gear one on the go outdoors website and ordered it along with the hi gear cookset and a load of other necessary (probably) stuff. Now then, what gas do I need? And where is best to buy? We have clic gas, but i don't think I can use that.

thrifty - yes, I think that cannister will fit. It needs to be a screw top. It does have ignition, on one of the legs of the stove as I recall. It's a great little bit of kit. It just goes inside one of our pans, rather than back in its box.

thrifty · 22/04/2012 21:27

That's great, thanks badger, I'll see if they have it in stock in my local argos :) can't wait to try it out now. I bought a second hand mypressi twist, so I just need a trolley to cart it all on now for bestival and I'll be away :)

badger21 · 23/04/2012 22:26

thifty, the mypressi looks very interesting. We have a moka pot (like this one, www.amazon.co.uk/Bialetti-Moka-Express-Espresso-Maker/dp/B0019M4H16 but a cheaper non-branded one acquired in france) that makes two perfect cups of espresso. Has been carried around everywhere, and also used loads at home on the stove.

thrifty · 24/04/2012 11:01

Hi badger, yes, we have one of those too, the mypressi was a bit of an extravagance, and I did think it would be smaller than it is, however it does make an incredible espresso, equivalent to my work machine.
Hopefully the weather will be better next weekend, I shall get the tent out, when all my new goodies arrive, and have a dry run with everything :)

Gah, go outdoors have still not delivered my huge order, when I chased it they said that the cooker was out of stock, they could have let me know! Anyhow, the other one is also out of stock, so now I need a cooker (preferably by friday). So your recommendations please, again. Must be reasonably priced, and quite like the design of hi gear one.

I have a Primus Eat Express for backpacking and hiking. Very light weight and quick to boil. Best if you want to boil water or heat food through. Not really for proper cooking.
