2 degrees overnight - should I cancel?

Okay, - so I LOVE camping, but I just can't handle the cold.
We were planning to go away at the weekend.

Just HOW do you keep warm?

This is what I do when it is couble figures at night:

Thermals under layer
leggings and long sleeve top next layer
thin jumper
Thick jumper
wooly hat
wooly socks

blow up camp mats doubled over
duvet to then lie on
Duvet on top
fleece on top

I have to add too that I only agreed to marry DH if he would guarantee that the heating would NEVER drop below 23 degrees in our house day and night such is my misery from the cold.

3 yr old will probaby sleep with nothing on, covers off and still be as warm as toast. SOmetimes I put her to bed in mine and then move her when I got to bed as she warms it nicely.

5 year old GETS very cold to the touch but doesn't seem to notice.

Anyway - how can I keep warm at 2 degrees? We have a Bell tent with no compartments.

I camped on Augsut bank holiday when it got down to freezing, but I was so drunk I got through it. Not an option being 7months pregnant now.

I would cancel, that's me tho. Miserable weather temp!

tiredemma · 12/04/2012 15:36

I love camping- I can go when its cold- but I really have to draw the line at cold and wet.

StarlightMcEggsie · 12/04/2012 15:38

I don't think it is going to rain where we are going, - although the ground might be wet.
We're pretty crap campers tbh so wet ground helps us get the pegs in. Otherwise we are hunting for various times of hitting implements etc.

Oh God, we would probably need wellies too.

I got my kids to 5 and 3 (and myself to 36) without ever finding the need for wellies. (I tend to just let the kids jump in puddles in whatever).

We camped last week think it went down below zero cos the milk was frozen in the morning, but we were all toasty. Kids didn't seem to notice.
All on SIMs not sure if that is what you are using or if they are air beds? Can put space blanket underneath and we put cheaply fleece blankets on top, then sleeping bags. Ds and dd have three season bags, me and dh have down ones, I feel the cold and have an ancient silk sleeping bag liner which does make a difference, yes and thermals of course but none of us went to bed with a hat on! Hot water bottles too? Warming effect of nice glass of red wine? Wine

dancingintherain · 12/04/2012 16:32

Oh sorry missed that you had said wine not an option, our kids love the ritual of making hot chocolate on colder nights too

A bit extreme, and possibly a bit late for this weekend ... but what about a woodburner plus its chimney kit?

StarlightMcEggsie · 12/04/2012 20:22

A bit scared of that idea tbh. DS has autism and am not confident he won't cause a fire some how. Also we have NO space in car to carry due to our 8 duvets.

I've slept out in a swag in the outback (no tent!), not sure what the temp was but my water bottle was frozen solid. I had thermal long sleeve top and long johns, tshirt, micro fleece, sweatshirt, woolly socks and hat. I slept in a swag (canvas bag with foam mattress) with a space blanket underneath, in a down filled mummy bag with a fleece blanket on top.
I was toasty warm, the trick is to make sure the mummy bag fits tightly round your head so no cold gets in.

Jammygal · 12/04/2012 21:17

Hot water bottles !!!

mintymellons · 13/04/2012 09:56

We're just back from our first family camping trip. We did two nights - Tues/Weds. It was both cold and wet. There were times when I was utterly miserable, times when it was ok and the odd occasion when it was lovely! We're def going to wait a few more weeks until it's way warmer at night. I have a sinus infection too so that didn't help matters.

Anyway, advice wise, we have self inflating mattresses on top of waterproof rugs with 3 season sleeping bags. My youngest DD who is only just two also slept in her gro bag with sleeping bag on top. We all wore thermals, PJs, socks and a fleece too.

Can you take an electric heater - we didn't as my DP wanted to do it all 'properly' and not use too many mod cons. He now realises that was a BIG mistake.

TBH, if I'd have known it was going to be so cold and wet, we would have cancelled. HTH.

Gumby · 13/04/2012 09:59

Why don't you just wait until the weather gets warmer?!
You're 7 months pregnant fgs , give yourself a break!

EssieW · 13/04/2012 10:02

Down jackets are what you need...love mine. All warm and toasty. Not sure I could have worn it at 7 months pregnant though

StarlightMcEggsie · 13/04/2012 10:03

Isn't 8 months pg worse?

We've been promising the kids since Christmas that we'd go at Easter and DH can only take leave in school hols.

Hmm... see your point with DS - my dn is ASD and while I trust my own children with fire I can't see myself ever trusting him. Shame because they work brilliantly and when properly installed, maintained, ventilated and correctly used etc are safe.
If electric hookup is available, I know a lady who always brings an electric blanket! I thought it would trip out the site electric supply, but it didn't.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 13/04/2012 11:20

We always do sleeping bag inside another sleeping bag to keep warm, plus thermals, layers upon layers upon layers, beanie hat.

Hot water bottles in to warm it up before you get in.

Don't get cold, layer up as soon as it starts to get chillier, don't wait to feel cold. I've even done small hot water bottle inside clothing if I'm fffffrizzzin.

FourArms · 13/04/2012 19:28

Hot water bottle between thighs is best place. I had best night (sub zero last w/e) with hat and hoodie combination and pillow wrapped in fleece.
