Hello all, i am quite new here, haven't really posted before and I am quite nervous about taking our DD camping for the first time. We usually go up to our friends farm to camp with all our other friends for a long weekend, do you think its feasible to go when we have a 6 month old?
Will we need a travel cot or should we co-sleep? What essentials do we need to take with us? Will she get too cold at night? So many questions! Hope there is someone experienced out there who can give us some advice! Thanks in advance folks :)

We took ours camping/caravvaning at 6 months, we were sleeping in the awning and we used dark sheets to section off a little nursery area for his travel cot. It was chilly at night but he was bundled up as usual with a thick sleepsuit, sleeping bag, etc so he was just fine, in fact he slept better.
Take a spare plastic plug so you can bathe him in the big sinks or in the shower tray in the loos. Some sites have baby baths (Home Farm on Anglesey is fantastic) but others don't.
Other than that just the usual stuff and remember things get wet so you need to keep nappies, etc double bagged and dry. Depends how much faffing about you want with milk, we just took a bulk tray of pre-mixed formula so we didnt have to mess around. If you are still sterilising you will need to take milton and a bucket as unlikely to see a microwave and you dont want to be carrying around a steamer. Food wise, again stick with Jars and dont worry about fresh for a little while! Have fun!

Yes.

Took dd camping when she was 9 weeks old for the first time. Then when she was 4mo we did a camping tour of Switzerland for a month.

We always co slept, and used a baby sleeping bag. Lots of layers, vests, fleecy sleep suit, etc.

I was breastfeeding at the time so didn't need any special equipment.

Should be do-able, if i were you i'd have a practise run in the back garden first. Your neighbours will think you've lost it, but you'll find out if she'll sleep in the tent, without the nightmare if she won't!

LoopyLoeufdePaques · 11/04/2012 12:44

I took mine 9 days post CSection, so yes you can!

thefudgeling · 11/04/2012 12:46

Yes you can. We took DS at 4 months. I was so nervous about him getting cold at night we had him in so many layers! He didn't get cold.

Was breastfeeding so no bottles etc. Also he slept in travel cot. It was great fun even though it rained for the whole three days!

Imnotaslimjim · 11/04/2012 14:12

Yup, we took DS at 8 weeks, just 2 days after his first lot of needles. MW and nurse thought we were barmy as he had fits and was on various meds. Sterilising was a nuisance, as we we're used to steaming, but it worked out ok. And both kids love camping now

We took a 6 month old last summer. I was breastfeeding so feeding her was pretty easy and I took a travel cot and layered her up (vest, babygro, fleecy sleepsuit, grobag, blanket if very cold). She slept very well in the tent, better than at home and I think 6 months is actually easier than the crawling stage, I'm really hoping she'll be walking by this summer!

We took our almost 6 mo on tour of france, belgium, netherlands, germany, austria, switzerland, + luxembourg. If you can beg/borrow etc a snowsuit, we found that was the best thing, as unlike sleeping bag it has arms + gloves. Was bf and co-slept in 2 person tent, so quite snuggly. Dd2 was similar age, ds was an old man at nearly 10 months and then only over night near home. His fault for being a sept baby!

Thefoxsbrush · 11/04/2012 19:50

I have taken my children camping when they were babies. They slept in a baby sleeping bag with sleeves in and in either their Moses basket/travel cot.

Take a bumbo/similar for feeding or feed in buggy.

Sterilise using Milton and a large bowl.

Have fun!

Yes. DD was 5 months or so.
We went in April 2011 first. She sleeps on a SIM in between me and DH (the tent heater). In April she had to wear vest, babygro, leggings, fleece suit and a thick grobag (and on the coldest night another top and a woolly hat!) but was warm with this lot on. Worst bit was feeding her in the evenings once it was getting cold...very drafty! She didn't need as many layers to sleep in when we went later in the year. I wouldn't use a travel cot as I prefer to have her right next to me so that I can easily check she is not too warm or too cold. Someone suggested using the cosytoe of the buggy as a kind of baby sleeping bag which sounds like a good idea to me if extra warmth needed.
TBH it was easy last year - she went 6 + times as the older dc are major fans of camping. I am dreading this year as she is now mobile, climbs anything she can get on top of and has no sense whatsoever.

We went tipi camping when ds was about 6months. He slept in an all in one snow suit and it was fantastic. He slept on a sleep mat next to me but not under my covers. The nights were really cold but he was really warm and slept better camping than he did at home. Go for it, you'll have a great time.

lolalotta · 12/04/2012 21:53

My mum took me and my twin sister camping when we were 6 weeks old! Plus my 3 sisters and brother too! :-o

OhWhatAPalaver · 13/04/2012 11:30

Thanks so much for all the advice everyone, i feel a bit better about it now! I'm bf-ing so should be ok on the milk front. I'm thinking i might have her sleeping next to us or in a travel cot, not decided yet. We're going in June so hopefully the weather should be reasonably warm. I'm really looking forward to it actually, should be fun seeing how DD reacts to being out in the countryside with lots of cows and sheep! :o

So glad you're going for it. I took ddtwins camping at seven months, co-slept in growbags on double airbed with one duvet under and another on top. Took loads of jars and ready mix formula as we were halfway through weaning at the time, luckily they were happy to have unheated food. Used buggy to keep them still when I needed to be busy, otherwise they were on picnic blankets when outside. It was fantastic, I've never regretted it as I would never have seen the total eclipse of the sun in Cornwall back in 1999 any other way.

ReshapeWhileDamp · 13/04/2012 14:50

We took DS2 to a folk festival for 4 nights last year - he was about 7 or 8 months. Co-slept (as normal!) with him on his own SIM that butted up to mine, and he was in a vest and fleecy all-in-one with a winter-weight grobag on top. If it was extra cold at night, I'd put a blanket over that. You can get baby camping sleeping bags but I don't think they're meant for such small babies.

He had a great time crawling round the tent, and ate bits of whatever we were eating (we had a supply of rice cakes, cucumber and pasta for him too). BF so don't know what other people do about milk - if it were me, I'd splash out on some cartons and bring a large ice cream tub and some milton.

humpdebump · 14/04/2012 19:19

I went with 7month old. Was sleeping in the bed next to me so I could check if he was too hot or cold, it felt safer that way. If your DC is in the crawling stage by June a good tip I heard was to take one of those all in one rainproof suits, so they can crawl around on the dewy grass and not get all their clothes wet. Oh and those Ella/Plum pouches for food are brilliant, we didn't have room for a high chair or similar so balancing a wriggling baby and spoon feeding was impossible, fortunately he really took to feeding straight out of the pouch.

Noqontrol · 14/04/2012 23:12

Oh I did that as well, squirting the Ella pouches into ds's mouth. It did all work really well.
