How far South in France?

Hi, we are keen campers in the UK but the weather over the last few years has meant we've only managed to sneak odd weekends and I am desperate for a good week/10 days away.

We were thinking of trying France but I want to ensure we have a greater chance of good weather. We need to go early summer hols - end of July/ early Aug and I know that will be busy so we might be dreaming but realistically, how far south should we be going to stand a good chance of sunshine?

We like quieter sites and would take our own tent, I stumbled on the Flower website yesterday - anyone had any experience of them?

All recommendations very much appreciated Smile

I can't recommend a specific site unfortunately but I live in the south of France. Generally the French say there is a dividing line between north and south France. Anywhere below Tour and the weather should be significantly better than Blighty. When are you thinking of going because that may help you to decide?

To get (almost) guaranteed sunshine the closest area is prob the Vendee (assuming you want to be by the coast).

St,Raphael, Frejus, St.Tropez, Cannes and Nice all in the Cote D'Azur all hot.

Second the Vendee. If you like quiet sites try www.campinglajoletiere.fr/ We go every year.

We've found the vendee a bit variable, a bit further south to Royan, or we went to Les Maths, can't remember the name of the site. Once you go to the med though you won't want to go anywhere else. Depending on age of children, ours a quite small so we need a few nights stop over to drive down there. St Tropez is v busy, but a bit further west was nice.

I am very envious of this - I would love to do it if car more reliable! We spent numerous summer holidays as kids (for same reason as you say, Mum wanted sunshine and camping was the way to do it with 3 young kids) in the South of France in a place called Cavalaire. I recently googled it and found sites there which looked great - it's in easy driving distance of St Tropez..

Happyjoyful, if you can get flight etc down there, lots of the campsites now have fully equiped tents, we were near there, and though probably a bit more developed the sea was really nice. Of course Corsica is the nicest place I've been camping in France, but that's not really budget holiday.

We stayed in Ile d'Oleron on the west coast last year at a Camping Indigo site. Weather was fab as we're beaches and it was walking distance to town.
It is a quiet site, very laid back natural feel to it. There is one beach to walk to, one you can get a little open train to and a big beach to drive to.
Our kids are 5 and 8 and loved it there.

Have also stayed at La Neptune in Agde on the south coast which was good. Very small site and well run.
