Are non-electic heaters ok to use inside tent?

Am v concerned about upcoming Easter camping with 2 small children, we're likely to freeze I think...we have no heater of any kind, but do I need to worry about carbon monoxide poisoning with a gas/propane one? The reviews on Amazon etc. don't mention this, but surely it's a concern? Kids are too little for campfire at the moment I think...any suggestions?! Smile

Yes - very dangerous!! Even a candle burning inside a tent causes a condition called 'tent eye' due to carbon monoxide fumes. Also the risk of fire is incredibly high in a tent.

Do not use anything like that in a tent......ever!

The risks are really high. People have died due to bbqs in tents as well as gas appliances. From what I've read it is often people trying tkeep warm.

Wrap up, lots of layers. Thermals, couple of fleeces, blankets, gloves and hats. It's all part of the experience and at least you know you will be safe. If it gets too cold all get In Your sleeping bags and have an early night.

Honestly, it really isn't worth it. There an incident recently where someone died after dragging a BBQ into their wooden cabin pod thingy for warmth. Last year in North Wales there were deaths in similar circumstances on a campsite. We all need to heed the warnings and keep ourselves safe,if a bit coldSmile

I tend to be in the it's not worth the risk camp with the others.

Jjou I have researched the same thing at length as would love to move to 3-4 season camping but am reluctant to go to the Dark Side down the path of ehu.

Is it the Camping Gaz Bluecat heater you were looking at? Coleman do an almost identical one too.
I'm not entirely sure how it works but there doesn't seem to be an external naked flame (some sort of ceramic disk at the front). I did find some safety advice for it which was to always supervise it while on [duh] and to use in a well ventilated area, which in a plastic tent with sig would mean having your vents/windows open and maybe the door too depending in the size of the area you were trying to warm.....which kind of defeats the object of what you are trying to do Grin

I would think it would be OK to use in the tent with a CO meter, lots of ventilation and super vigilance about it not getting knocked over/flammable materials touching it.

Tbh I think investing in some good quality thermals, a hot water bottle and some poncey hot chocolate would keep you warm without the worry of CO poisoning or fire Smile

Cheap hot chocolate would also work but OMG have you tried Hotel Chocolat's Aztec Chilli drinking chocolate? It is bloody gorgeous and the chilli gives it an extra warming zowie. Doesn't cost £50 either. It's now on my printed camping packing list.

Hot water bottles, thermals and layers, hot choc and snuggling in together. Extra Blankets as well. It's always been me and DH, can't wait to take DD soon.

That's what I thought! I haven't bought one, we've never bothered before but this is the earliest we've been away. Can't believe they're sold as heaters for tents but they just seem so unsafe! Bought some £1 thermals for the kids from Primark earlier, we'll just have to make do.
