Useless things for camping

Whilst looking at the Aldi camping bits I started thinking about stuff I thought would be fab but was a waste of money/space, the kind of thing most people try once and throw away.

For me it would be the camping toaster (the type you put on top of the stove). I was sooooo excited to get it! Breakfast would be revolutionised!

I burnt myself, used half a can of gas to get a vaguely coloured piece of bread (I can't bring myself to say toast, it clearly wasn't) whilst trying to convince OH that it hadn't been a waste of money.

I soon bought a double burner with grill, which is actually fab for toast!

ha ha - I opened the thread to say camping toasting rack Grin
(Better is a Diablo tasted sandwich maker - works a treat on a stove. Or a more sturdy pie iron for camp fires.)

chimchar · 31/03/2012 13:39

Hahaha! We have one too! I think we might actually have binned it after its first use (or useless more like!!)

MrsMc82 · 31/03/2012 17:24

Totally agree re the toast rack!!!! have bought this in hope that it'll be a bit better but only does a slice at a time........

treadonthecracks · 31/03/2012 19:31

The various toaster things we have bought was what I thought of as I saw the title!

My know it all BIL has bought one for his first family camping trip this summer - ha ha ha.

Andie20521 · 31/03/2012 20:16

Yup the toaster is definately something we have all fallen for the allure of...a cheap lesson, but it has put me off buying other pieces of kit unless strongly recommended/researched.

Oh my god, hahahahahah just started exactly the same thread... inspired by same sorry toasting device! Sorry Andie! Grin

Those plastic Water carriers with the taps on. The taps are crap... They leak a d the water tastes foul!
A 2 litre bottle of water works just fine

Blu · 01/04/2012 18:11

I agree about water carriers. We use one of the big bottled water containers, the ones with a handle over the top. Cjeap enough even bought full from Tesco, then we just re-fill it and buy a new one every so often,

granule · 01/04/2012 18:14

arse. I've just bought a water-carrier-with-tap. Was enticed by how small it folds down Blush

Blu · 01/04/2012 18:18

Maybe yours will turn out to be the perfect one!
though in my limited experience the squashable folding ones are the worst

hellsbells76 · 01/04/2012 18:18

Wind-up lanterns. You get more illumination from a cigarette lighter.

rainbowinthesky · 01/04/2012 18:20

Any sort of lantern that isnt one of those dirt cheap led ones. Since discovering led lights in wilkinsons I've never used my normal lights.

Milliways · 01/04/2012 20:30

Totally agree with the toaster - ours too was binned after one trip Grin

Our water carrier has been successful though - think that came from Aldi.

mrspnut · 01/04/2012 20:33

We have the folding toaster, I think it was used once about 7 years ago and now lives in the bottom of the camping box.
We also have a couple of platypus water bags, with a couple of spare sports cap lids.

pictish · 01/04/2012 20:37

Argh I hate our foldable water carrier that is rubbish and that my dh insists on filling, and that it is impossible to get any water out of without slipping a disc.

hellsbells76 · 01/04/2012 21:50

Cheap 'non-stick' foldable frying pans. The teflon peels off and sticks to your sausages the first time you try to use them.

pictish · 02/04/2012 08:38

We take a normal frying pan.

xmyboys · 02/04/2012 08:50

DH?

hellsbells76 · 02/04/2012 09:48

So do I, now. I was temporarily seduced by the folding nature of it. You can flog any old shit to campers if it folds down small.

pictish · 02/04/2012 10:36

Oh I agree. I get very excited over camping gear that packs down small. Anything that is dual purpose too!

I get my thrills going to outdoor shops, and browsing them on the net as well.

I have seen a folding double burner stove that I am really coveting. We have a good, reliable single burner stove. Dh would not be agreeable to my spending ££s on a stove when we already have one.
This one folds though...and it has two!!

pictish · 02/04/2012 10:37

[[http://www.campingaz.com/uk/p-26406-fold-ngo.aspx dribble]

pictish · 02/04/2012 10:38

And again...
dribble

hellsbells76 · 02/04/2012 10:48

Ooh! WANT!

pictish · 02/04/2012 10:55
Grin

I have recently purchased a couple of camping cookbooks...looking for inspiration beyond bacon, sausages and beans. I have been fair fired up and am lusting after some serious cooking kit.

chipmonkey · 02/04/2012 13:28

Ds1 and ds2. At least when you send them on a camping trip by themselves. They come home minus most of the kit I send them with, I'm actually surprised when they return with the tent.
