High Sand Creek V Breck Farm

I like the look of both - HSC is closer to the sea which I prefer but Breck allows campfires which I love. HSC allows bbq's raised off the ground and no wood burning which is a disadvantage.

Opinions please!

I would have the same dilemma!

HSC is in a fabulous location, with walks directly onto the saltmarsh and a sandy creek. The actual sea (and fabulous beach at low tide) is a walk across the saltmarsh paths. It's a shorter drive to the wonderful beaches of Wells and Holkham, as well as to Morston for the seal trips.

Breck Farm is closer to the shingle beaches of Weybourne, Salthouse and Cley, although a short drive to Sheringham, Cromer, and close to the excellent beach at West Runton.

Camping is by marked pitch at HSC, whereas it looks more free for all and spacious at Breck Farm.

I have camped at HSC, it was lovely, and driven past Breck Farm many times.

hillbilly · 26/03/2012 13:43

We plan to be there for a few days so don't really mind driving to the beaches. Such a dilemma!

How old are your children? I've been to both sites (and only live about 20 miles away). Breck Farm has lots of woodland surrounding it to play in, allows campfires and is very laid back. It's nice and flat, has lots of (very unpretentious) showers and toilets, sells eggs/spuds etc. You can walk down to Weybourne station through the woods (steam train) and also to the nearest shop (about 15 mins).

High Sand Creek is a bit more "rules and regulations" I thought. Marked pitches, some of which were a bit slopy. It's right on the marshes so great if you want to walk, fish for crabs etc but not much else there. The local pub used to be good, but is now not all that great for food (I wouldn't go again).

Personally I much prefer Breck Farm, but it really depends on what you're looking for. Happy to give you more info about the area if you want Smile

Grockle · 26/03/2012 20:53

Love, love, love HSC but the new management are much more into rules & regulations than the previous people. Fab for children though and we go there every year - DSs 7, 6, 5

hillbilly · 26/03/2012 21:29

Thanks MGB and Grockle - kids are 7 & 4. My preference is for laid back camping with a campfire however DH does like to have decent loos. We also would like to not be in a field with caravans. I am leaning towards Breck Farm since proper wood burning campfires at any time are pretty important. We can still get to the beaches and marshes easily though can't we? We plan to take bikes too.

At Breck Farm it depends how many fields they have open. They used to have 3, but when we went last year there were only 2. Hook-ups (mainly caravans) are sited near to the farm/toilets etc and campers can pitch anywhere else, so you can get plenty of distance between you and the vanners!

The toilets and showers are fine, but don't look fancy - lots of them but built of breeze blocks. They have power points for hairdryers etc too.

MissGreatBritain · 27/03/2012 13:10

Just a thought, but you could do both?

hillbilly · 27/03/2012 13:21

Ah yes I think I looked on google earth and saw the ugly loo blocks. Hmm I had forgotten about that.

We don't really want to up sticks and move as we are only staying 3/4 nights.

Can you see the toilet block from the camping field at Breck farm?

Blu · 28/03/2012 11:07

Hillbilly - you will have a lovely time wherever you go - the campfire is important to you, so book Breck Farm before they all get booked up!

hillbilly · 28/03/2012 11:25

I know Blu - I should just book it!

OP posts:
Blu · 28/03/2012 11:42

What about this place

Brazier fires allowed, and clothes optional!

Blu · 28/03/2012 11:43

When are you going?

ihatethecold · 28/03/2012 12:18

breck farm was the worst place ive ever camped at in my life.. HSC anyday

Blu · 28/03/2012 12:29

What didn't you like about it?

ihatethecold · 28/03/2012 12:59

i toilet for about 5000 campers. it was just grim

ihatethecold · 28/03/2012 12:59

sorry i meant 1 toilet

Blu · 28/03/2012 13:16

Was it a while ago? Because on the website it says they have a 'large' toilet block! I am thinking we might camp in Norfolk a bit this summer, so am interested in views.

hillbilly · 28/03/2012 14:27

ihatethecold - tell me more

It was just horrid, far too many campers. Everyone had a campfire. Everything stunk of burning wood. Incuding the tent for about 6 months. The queue for the tiolet was rediculous. It really only had 2 tiolets fir the whole site,
I love camping but i would rather chew a cochroach than go back there!Angry

Manor farm is a lovely site. Thats in east runton. Not far from cromer. Lots of clean facilities.
Deers glade was a great place. About 15 mins to the seaside. Not as big as manor farm so need to book early. Can fish onsite also.
High sand creek is fab for kids. Very close to the marshes. Small site but very friendly and close to wells!
I stayed at the nasty site about 3 yrs ago. So in all fairness it may be better. But i would never go back!

pipsy76 · 29/03/2012 14:27

Ooh what an exciting thread to find as I've just booked HSC for the jubilee bank holiday for 5 nts, we got the last pitch!(sorry)

Would thoroughly recommend Deers Glade it's simply the best site I've ever been to but full for all the dates I want, looking forward to trying out HSC.

ihatethecold · 30/03/2012 11:30

the pub at the end of the road by HSC does amazing breakfasts if you fancy it. i think the pub is called the red lion.

on our last day we packed up, then went there (all 14 of us) and even though we were a bit late for breakfast they still served us some lovely grub!

hillbilly · 30/03/2012 21:29

Here's the thing - I love a campfire and the fact that HSC only allow raised BBQs immediately makes me think twice about it. But on the other hand I don't want to stay in a dump.

OP posts:
ihatethecold · 31/03/2012 14:16

its probably not a dump anymore... im just scarred for life Grin
