B&B in/near Calais with SECURE parking - any ideas?

As above really - we will have a car full of camping gear and 3 bikes on the back. Would be arriving in the evening and would like somewhere to sleep before the drive to the Alps (we will be driving on the A26, so somewhere enroute would be good, max 1 hour from Calais).

DH (and myself, I suppose) are worried about the bikes on the back getting nicked, etc so didn't really fancy a hotel in Calais itself. So we were thinking maybe a country B&B, not too far from Calais. Would need a family room for 4 (DS 5yo, DD 2yo).

Does anyone have any recommendations please? There are so many online....
Thank You!

We've booked the Holiday Inn at Calais for this summer as it has secure parking. I think there's another thread about this somewhere too. HTH!

Lovecat · 20/03/2012 14:46

We've booked in at La Ferme Du Vert which is about a 20 min drive from Calais Eurotunnel for much the same reason. Never been before (first camping trip abroad - squeee!) but it had good reviews on Trip advisor and does have family rooms.

What a coincidence. I am looking for the same thing today. We want somewhere to stay the night before sailing back.

I am particularly conscious of the secure parking because my parents have twice had their luggage stolen from their cars. Once my dad's car was broken into when he left it in a car park in Calais at lunchtime!

We went to the beach at Boulogne on Sunday and it's actually quite nice so we'd like to stay somewhere near there. But I'm thinking an out of town chambre d'hote would be a safer place to leave the car.

Lovecat La Ferme du Vert looks gorgeous and exactly the right location. But might be a bit pricey for the end of our trip. A municipal campsite is probably closer to our budget Sad

Lovecat · 20/03/2012 15:37

It is a bit expensive, Quenelle, but we decided to treat ourselves because it was the last day of what is going to be a relatively cheap holiday - DH not a fan of camping so this is the sweetener for him!

Quenelle · 20/03/2012 17:07

Actually Lovecat, having looked at what's available, La Ferme du Vert is starting to look quite reasonable. I'm pretty sure DH will decide we should go for the campsite option though, when he sees what a B&B costs.

I hope your husband becomes a camping convert after your trip Smile

What have you decided to go for wickedfairy?

We have stayed at la ferme du vert and it's fantastic. We had a family room, that was really two adjoining rooms, in one of the outbuildings. It was on the first floor with a garage underneath. The restaurant there is also very nice and there are pretty walks round about. Would thoroughly recommend it.

I linked to this b&b on your other thread. No good?

FamiliesShareGerms · 24/03/2012 11:09

Holiday Inn in Cocquelles? Not secure as in gated, but quiet, off the beaten track and lots of rooms look out over the car park

FamiliesShareGerms · 24/03/2012 11:10

Oh, and the French police use it themselves quite a bit (guessing training courses?) so it always feels very safe to see the reception full of gendarmes!

wickedfairy · 24/03/2012 14:49

Jamais - I have sent them an email, just waiting to hear back - it looks great!

I was faffing around thinking a travellodge place would be fine, but I am now going down the road of B&B's!!

It is also on the road south that we plan on taking anyway, so even better - thanks for the recommendation!

No problem. Let us know what it's like if you do go. If you need any help with the French just shout. (language rather than people!)

wickedfairy · 24/03/2012 15:15

Thanks, will do. Have you been to that one before yourself?

We were planning on driving through the night from the NW, then through France the next day. However, on second thoughts, I will be knackered and maoning so it is probably in everyones interest that we stop and sleep somewhere enroute!

No sorry, I just googled it but it looks like a lot of places where we have stayed before en route for the south!

I think you should definitely break the journey. We regularly drive from Normandy to the Alps to see family, it's 7-8hrs drive and we all arrive in much better shape when we break the journey overnight. It's a long way!

MrsMc82 · 25/03/2012 13:39

Was thinking of staying in an formular one in calais on our way back.....is this a bad idea? (security wise I mean, know the hotel its self is going to be cheap and v v basic and maybe bad on a whole different level! ;) )

jamaisjedors · 25/03/2012 18:56

The hotel will be fine, but my parents had their car broken into in a Calais hotel carpark a few years ago, just don't leave anything visible out. They just took my mum's jacket I think (not stuff from the boot).

MrsMc82 · 25/03/2012 20:52

oh good thats ok then, thnks jamais we'll be security concious i guess and not taking our own gear so i guess they car won't be stuffed to the hilt (like it usually is when we camp!)

cheerup · 25/03/2012 21:42

We're booked in at the B&B calais coquelles twice this summer with & car and roof box crammed to the gills no doubt. Nothing much worth taking though - all personal crud and ebay bargains except for the Base 4.2 and Cobb (might have to take those into the room with us!!!)

Quenelle · 26/03/2012 15:14

My parents had all their stuff stolen from their boot once. They had taken a few things into their hotel and left everything else in the boot overnight. Think they got in through the back seats.

The B&B has secure parking - locked gates over night. No theft reports anywhere online that I canfind. We'll take usual precautions & cross our fingers.
