Camping in the uk - moved from Chat (thanks Zombie!)

I've read a few threads recently about camping in the Uk - I would love to try it, I used to be a scout and then a leader so have lots of experience of camping per say but nothing that would be suitable for my DS and I. My experiences are pretty much of a grubby field with grubby loos and grubby scouts - is this the extent of it?

We're in the North West and my DS is 2.7 now but I'd be looking at May/June ish anyway as I'm just at the end of my degree and will have finished by then.

Does anybody have any suggestions or experiences?

I mean I'd love to take him to a festival but they're mostly too expensive! So maybe just a nice site that's not too far away (maybe 2 hours drive?) that isn't grubby and has plenty of stuff to do close by? I'd be open to tent or caravan so long as it wasn't too expensive iykwim?

Thanks!

What about Knockengorroch festival in Galloway?
www.knockengorroch.org.uk/about/ I haven't been but my daughter has, says its child friendly, actually friendly and laid back in general

Most UK campsites have shower blocks, clean toilets, etc
Try looking at websites set up for campers like www.ukcampsite.co.uk/

I've been to Keilder campsite, quiet, lovely dark skies, pub at the end of the path ( closed Mondays )

There's a campsite on the edge of Edinburgh , Mortonhall, small shop, clean warm shower block, pub, near buses into city

There's loads of really nice campsites here in mid-Wales, with nice facilities and plenty to do.

We have stayed here and it was wonderful- quiet, clean toilet block, small park, lots of rabbits, amazing view and close to a gorgeous beach, and plenty of things to do in the area.

That looks wonderful Belle.

I was going to suggest Hollins farm at Silverdale or Eistedffa campsite at Criccieth, both are lovely.

North Welsh coast is lovely - seaside, or easy access to Snowdonia. Buy or borrow a large tent -large enough to cook in if it's raining, then you should be fine. Caravans cost a bit more - though possibly not too much if you avoid half term.
