I'm holding off 'til the summer. Just got my new roof struts, and trying to book in to get them fitted. in the meantime, we're planning a few days out (and buying some thermal screens as recommended on here before sleeping in the van). Desperate to get out and about though!

Ohforfoxsake · 01/04/2012 15:45

useful thread with some essential shopping lists

deste · 01/04/2012 23:19

We have a Rimor Katemerano motorhome and we love it. We are supposed to be going away next week but I'm not sure.

Milliways · 02/04/2012 18:00

We are getting a Swift Sundance in 2 weeks :)

flaime · 02/04/2012 18:12

Hi there milliways, we upgraded to a sundance last year, which one are you getting? Nice to see some other motorhome owners appearing in camping Smile

Milliways · 02/04/2012 18:24

I think it is a 630G. Has a fixed double over a garage and a double over the cab. :)

flaime · 02/04/2012 18:50

We went for the 630L, same van but with the lounge at the back instead of the fixed bed. I love it - loads of space for the 5 of us without tripping over each other. Just cleaned ours today ready for our first trip of the year but now it's forecasting sleet Sad.

Milliways · 02/04/2012 21:23

You need a lounge with 5. We will mainly just be the 2 of us, + occasional DS (who can have cab bed) or maybe even DD / other friends - but she is rarely home and getting married at Christmas. It is probably far too big for us really but DH got an amazing deal, and we can see how we go for a few years and then swap for a different layout if needed. AT least getting 2nd hand it has had lots added (awning, solar panel, tv etc etc).

We have booked a trip with friends at half term but need some local weekends first to try it out.

moosemama · 08/04/2012 16:59

Hello, can I join? We have a type 2, tin-top with twin sliding doors. (Although the passenger side sliding door can't be used at the moment, as it's been overdue for replacement for far too long. Blush)

This is our 5th (or 6th, I forget [buconfused]) type 2 and we've had this one for 10 years now. All our previous vans bar the first (which was a Dormy) were Westy's, which we enjoyed restoring. We sold our last Westy when ds1 was born, as it was completely restored and we thought we wouldn't be happy watching as it got wrecked through constant, mud, sand, dog-fur etc. That's when we bought this one and its been a real fun work-horse that we can charge around in with the dcs and until recently 3 dogs (just got the 2 dogs now) without stressing about it getting wrecked.

Cowboy, as he is affectionately known, is very basic inside. Just a full width Westy r&r bed and a sink, cooker and storage unit across the bulkhead. We have 3 dcs and when we go away dd (3) sleeps in the cab bunk, ds1 and 2 have the bed with dh and I end up in the awning on my own. Hmm We have plans to overhaul the interior a bit, but not until we've finished with the bodywork.

We are currently looking at a huge bill for some welding and bodywork before we can use the camper this year and wondering if we'll actually manage it. We need a new passenger-side sliding door (obviously) - which are as rare as hen's teeth and cost £££s, welding to the rear quarter and passenger-side rear wheel arch and a whole new rear-side panel on the same side. Once this is done, we will finally have finished all the essential work that needs doing, but looking at the cost, we may well be going on holiday in the car instead this year. Sad

Our dcs consider the van part of the family and won't hear of us changing it for one with a pop-top so we can all fit inside to sleep. Easy for them to say, seeing as it's not them that has to sleep in the awning. Hmm Grin

Jammygal, my ds1 is small for his age and slept in the cab-bunk until he was 8.

Jammygal · 10/04/2012 17:33

Well I'm back from a five day tour! have been in Devon camping then stayed with a friend last night and home today.......and we survived! We managed to put up awning, get ds used to cab bunk, cooked every night and kept warm enough without ehu!
Thermomats and hot water bottles worth their weight in gold.
iceytek was awesome - great kids seat and milk still frozen now!

I need to still improve bed as it was like sleeping on a bumpy floor!
Forgot to take croc type shoes which was a shame as boots were a hassle getting on and off to go to loo etc

Can't wait to go again now........so where have you guys been???? Any dubfreeze peops????

Ooh - don't know how I've missed this! Can I join? We've had a VW T4 for three years now and it's the best thing we've ever bought. Use it for day trips all the time as well as camping - and DH drives it to work every day too.
The DSes are now 10 and 9 - the first year they slept in the roof, but Ds1 found it too hot and kept waking up with night terrors, so we quickly changed to an awning - DH and DS2 (who is autistic) in the awning, me and Ds1 in the van. It was OK, but DH and I wanted to be able to sleep together ( so we can talk and read!!Grin ) but didnt feel the awning was secure enough for Ds2 without an adult. We thought about a tiny caravan ( I coveted an Eriba) but they were too expensive.

Then last year we bought a small trailer tent which we now tow behind the van - for us it's the perfect combination. The Dses sleep in the tent - they have a large bed each, off the floor, so sleep much better, and the tent has a proper door on it, which we can lock, but leave a flap open at the very top so we can hear them if needed. It also gives us that bit more space - great when the weather is bad. The only problem is that Camping and Caravanning Club sites won't let us pitch together because of fire safety regulations. We don't mind paying for two pitches but we have to be close because of Ds2. All other sites have been fine about it, especially when we say we only cook in the van ( and actually no-one's yet charged us for two pitches). I always email or phone ahead and ask first though.

I have a camping recipe that I've just discovered - egg burgers. One egg, handful of oats, bit of finely chopped onion, bit of grated cheese. Mix ( it looks horrible at this point but persevere) and fry until brown and crisp on both sides. Eat in rolls with ketchup, lettuce or whatever. Delicious, filling and cheap!

Jammygal · 11/04/2012 20:01

Hey Sphil.....welcome Grin .....good tip about trailer tent.....also interesting egg burger recipe ;)

Moosemama - I'd think sleeping alone in awning away from dcs would be bliss!

moosemama · 12/04/2012 09:38

Igggi, it would be, if we ever managed to camp in anything other than wild gales and torrential rain.

I could choose to sleep with the boys on the pull out bed, but if I'm honest, I'd rather take my changes with the elements. Grin

Jammygal · 12/04/2012 10:57

Anyone off this weekend???? Where are you going?

Noqontrol · 12/04/2012 21:14

Oooh, can I join in? We've got a 2004 fiat Carioca motor home. We upgraded last year to accommodate the kids, and it's wonderful. Before children we had an Eldis auto quest for about 15 years. Just planning which festivals we're going to go to this summer Smile

Jammygal · 12/04/2012 21:16

Hello Noqontrol, you are most welcome ;)

Hello, newbie camper van owner. We've got a BRIGHT orange T25 hi top, which we are trying to eliminate rust from Smile. The kids have done overnights in the drive, but we are ready for our first overnighter....We've been invited to a friends party, what are the rules on sleeping in the van in a rural lay by? Only us, not kids! Their drive isn't big enough and I can't see any campsite within walking distance....

Noqontrol · 13/04/2012 09:02

Not sure about the rules really. OH and I used to pull up pretty much anywhere to park overnight. Generally laybys, those places that lorries park overnight and often supermarket or pub car parks. We never had any problems. If there's no signs saying 'no over night parking' then I wouldn't think twice. Just make sure you're locked in safely. My friend parked in a layby somewhere in France, and woke up feeling a bit sea sick from a big group of drunk lads rocking her van from side to side. Oh how she laughed (NOT). I think it's pretty rare when stuff like that happens though, nothing like that ever happened to me anyway.
