best camping chairs

following the success of my "best..." threads last year (which resulted in me buying cool box, dutch oven and various other things) I have decided to do some more this year :-D

today's topic, as you can see, is chairs....
we have a good table, but our chairs wobble, and fold up by themselves.
what are good chairs for uneven ground?? need to be as small as poss when folded, and light too

Bump as I need to buy new chairs for this season too! I had a lovely one from a cheapo shop that's since closed down, lasted seven seasons but collapsed in a blaze of glory round Nettletea's campfire last August Bank Holiday.

what was it like random?

It failed your small as possible test, but made up for it in sheer comfort, basically a deckchair, tubular metal frame, padded in all the right places, supported head beautifully for meteor spotting etc. Everyone else had cheapo Woolies type telescopic folding chairs, but last summer saw them all disintegrate one by one and in any case you get a crick in the neck when star gazing in those. We do a lot of star-gazing on camping trips as there's so much light pollution here you're lucky to be able to make Orion out.
Someone at the last Beautiful Days we made it to had a Moon Chair, folded up surprisingly small and was definitely comfy and head supportive. I don't remember it collapsing or wobbling even late in the evenings when no-one apart from the children was 100% sober.

could you use it to sit up and eat at a table too?

i could compromise on space a little bit, for the right chair

Both my late lamented chair and the Moon Chair were definitely more lounging around in friendly, we use one of those folding tables with built in seats for eating. tbh I've never seen a chair that is perfect for both, if you think about it at home you using a dining chair to sit at the table, high, reasonably solid level seat, nearly vertical back, but when you veg out you move to a lower, deeper wider armchair or sofa. The garage/woolies/cheapo umbrella folding chairs are a compromise that doesn't work properly for either job.
I suspect one reason our chairs have given up is the sheer size of DP, 6'4" ex rugby player, I know he's moved into mine when I've been doing stuff, and the other three were no-one's in particular.
A friend who we camp with regularly has a couple of wooden Hollywood Director's chairs, these are quite highseated so ok to use at table and have a sort of tilting back which means they are not too uncomfortable for the wine and stargazing stage.

We do have an inflatable armchair, absolutely useless for eating but very comfy indeed for lounging, the dds tend to squabble for it. Hawkin's Bazaar I think.
I'm drifting towards getting a couple more for me and the left-over dd and making DP buy his own industrial strength seat!

And the inflatable armchair squishes right down and can be shoved in any gap you have, blows up with the same pump as the airbeds, and the dining-table with four built in seats folds completely flat into itself and fits very neatly into the back of a Scenic.

I love these www.campervanaccessories.co.uk/royal-commander-folding-camping-chair-brown-p-11874.html?osCsid=8ba6e121a9871474d961bca815297fb2 they don't fold up half as small as the cheapy folding chairs but 5: kept breaking them by pushing the arms of them when standing up...... These ones have sturdy arms and are sooooooo comfy..... Do take up a fair amount of space tho...

randommoment · 01/03/2012 10:00

Like the look of that MrsMc and it's in the budget zone, have bookmarked and will mull over - looks like it might be strong enough for DP's enormous fat arse large build. Might still get the inflatable armchairs anyway and a pair of these too.

biscuitmad · 01/03/2012 11:05

We used our tesco vouchers and got a table and chairs in one, tbh its abit difficult for oh to sit down without knocking the table his rather large. For him the best chair he found that can support his weight was a blow up chair it looks like a spare tire and its perfect for packing away.

Poppyjen · 12/04/2012 10:35

Bumping this thread - need a decent camping chair for this year's adventures (will be variously 20 weeks, 32 weeks and 36 weeks pregnant on our three trips so comfort and sturdiness is all important)

Any recommendations?

Space will be quite limited in the car....

I've found the little folding stools best for eating at the table like these.
But might get two of these aswell because they are multi purpose.

They are small and take up very little space but are obviously not comfortable for lounging in, I think two reclining chairs might also have to find space in the van. I'd love some suggestions, small rather than light is most important.

I also bought these for myself and all my friends and family at Christmas www.keapbeeproducts.com/wine-glass-clamp

I have those Royal Commander chairs and they are realyl comfy. Especially with a blanket if you get cold at night!

loubielou31 · 18/04/2012 15:16

Do the Royal commander chairs have a high back? I like being able to rest my head on something at the back. Smile

FriendofDorothy · 18/04/2012 15:25

They do have quite a high back and I am quite short!

flaime · 19/04/2012 19:37

We have the Royal adjustable ones, just like the others but you can recline then when drinking Wine and sunbathing Grin. Are quite large when folded up though.

will be watching with interest

I've just ordered my first camping chair - a Vango Corona in Moss Green. Around the £30 mark plus delivery. It looks lovely and padded, has a high back which is essential for me as I'm quite tall, an insulated cup holder and it also reclines. Am busy researching and shopping for various bits of kit before I take DS on our first camping trip. Next is a small camping chair and SIM for him. Will report back on comfyness of said Vango chair next week when it arrives and I've tested it.
