Scottish highlands campsite - recommendations?

Thinking of heading to the highlands later in the year, maybe June or early July, can anyone recommend a good campsite that allows dogs and is nice and peaceful. Ideally with some walks around that I could manage with a one year old in a back carrier.

I've heard midges can be pretty bad in some areas, can anyone tell me how they found them?

This is my favourite place Caolasnacon

Midges will be out in June and July and August - go in May :) !

High Ridge or Rothiemurchus or Loch Morlich. All in or near Aviemore where there is lots to do. We went in May, August and September and never noticed the midges.

Midges will be terrible that time of year in the Highlands! You're better off camping near the west coast of Scotland where there is a chance of a breeze (which keeps the midges down).

There is a stunning campsite right on a sandy beach near Fionnphort on Mull....Fidden Farm Camp Site here

Thank you everyone, I'll check out your suggestions :)

Weove the red squirrel, right in the heart of glencoe. So peaceful but very basic. midges can be an issue but as pp said Avon skin so soft (green bottle) usually does the trick.

Fantastic site at Port Ban in Argyllshire. No midges cos its on the beach. Not sure if takes dogs or not. You wake up to amazing views of Islay and Jura.

Clactoll, on the Sutherland coast, about an hour north-west of Inverness.

Lovely campsite, easy to pitch, fantastic location right next to a lovely beach, and enough walks nearby, Lochinver for food not far.

As for how one finds the midges, in Scotland midges find you!

This one in Gairloch is a good family campsite, with a lovely sandy beach. It's laid out in a way which provides lots of nooks and crannies to pitch your tent in. Excellent shop onsite. Lots of walks of varying lengths in the area - eg Flowerdale Glen from Gairloch itself would be a nice one for your purposes:

If you'd consider Skye, we've always found this one great:

Midges hard to escape in Scotland. To a certain extent you've just got to grit your teeth. I've never smoked but sometimes feel like taking it up just for the duration because a lit fag in your mouth seems the best way to keep the little buggers away. They don't like wind (so sea breezes an advantage) or bright sunshine (you just might get lucky!).

One other thing - the sites fill up during the school holidays so if you can go in mid-june before they break up you will find it much less crowded, and there will be less queuing for facilities. Scottish schools start their holidays earlier than English ones, so if you're not from Scotland, you might want to check online.

Scotland is nicer in June, anyway, as far as I'm concerned. Will be going there then myself, but not camping this year. Have had two kidney operations and have to go for a pee twice during the night at the very least, so it's not really on!

Hope you find your ideal site.

Some of those sites look amazing! Thanks everyone. Thanks for the reminder about Scottish school holidays being different Roxy.

Just to add

Camusdarach and invercaimbe - near Arisaig, lovely beaches, clean, amazing views.

Have also been to Port Ban, it's lovely.

Gairloch is a fab site - not too bad for midges if you get a sea breeze. There's a lovely pub/restaurant a couple of miles up the road where we ate dinner while watching gannets diving for fish, just magical. (On the downside, I had to take a tick off DD and she got a sand fly bite!). We went during the summer holidays and it was fine. Went to the gardens at Inverarie - major midge hang out!
I've not stayed there, but saw the site recommended up thread in Mull and it is just beautiful - you'd be hard pressed to find anywhere prettier. Mull is lovely.
Avon skin so soft is the answer to midges - and it smells quite nice too.
