What would it be like? What facilities would it have? What other services or extras would it have?

Fairly basic and quite small. Generally the middle of nowhere.I hate regimented rows... So that's a no no straight off. I hate overcrowding. I prefer tiered sites or sites with different levels. I like a bit of shelter....a few trees... Somewhere to string a washing line.
Facilities: tap, washing up facilities, clean showers and toilets, bit of local services info is always good.
That's about it

Lucycat · 08/10/2011 18:40

Decent size pitches so I don't have to listen to other people's conversations or cross guy ropes with them. Clean showers and enough of them - wthout push buttons, plenty of water points, fridge to freeze cool blocks. Small shop to get milk, bread & wine.

On the continent - trees for shade, pool area smallish away from tent area, access to a lake or river and SUNSHINE. Smile

and not many Brits Grin

Decent sized ptitches with easily accesible EHU.
Free hot clean showers which have space to hang clothes and get dried in the dry...ideally with space for small child to be with you and keep dry.
Clean loos.
A family bathroom.
A playground that is in good condition (DD thinks it's not camping if there is no playground)
A shop on site selling things you need (Including ice cream!) at sensible prices.
Staff available to help and make sure that dogs don't run off leads and that people are quiet after a certain time.
And maybe a handy indoor swimming pool!!!!

tralalala · 08/10/2011 19:47

no litter (been to two amazing sites ruined by this- hire litterpickers ffs)
clean toilets
good playground
not too big
shaded areas
trees to climb
fires allowed
space between tents
a family field with a no late night noise rule
a non-family area with a no noisy early risers rule
a big communal fire on some nights

Goldberry · 08/10/2011 19:54

Smallish
Nice showers and toilets, and a bath
Big pitches, preferably divided by hedges
Nice playground
Small shop on site for essentials
No late night noise
That's about it!

I'd be very happy with a basic site with clean loos a stand pipe for drinking water and amzing scenery..... Also if was very honest I'd quite like it to have noone else there just me DH, DS and the dog!....... Wild camping would be a stretch too far, I couldnt cope without a proper flushing loo!!

mousymouse · 08/10/2011 22:51

basic and clean
hedges to shelter against the wind
heated loo/shower block, no chemical toilets
no dogs/pets
honesty shop with the basics
strict quiet night rule
no trailers/caravans

Blu · 09/10/2011 19:53

Wild and unregimented.
Pitches in glades or clumps of trees / bushes, acting as screens to noise and for privacy
Lots of woods to play in
Fires allowed
A stream somewhere
A small cafe and a good shop selling a good selection of basics - home baked goods / farm produce / beer
Roomy 'family' showers
Clean toilets
Lovely walks
Amplified / electronic / electric music not allowed

I found it! My perfect site!

This weekend we went to a super small site, 40 mins from, a small field, surrounded by horses and sheep on one side and woods on the other, with a stand pipe a loo, a fire pit for each pitch and best bit - no other bugger there for the whole 3 nights because it was too blooming cold me DH, DS and the dog had a super time! Sunday was lovely weather after the frost melted I sat in the sun reading with The Archers omnibus on the wind up radio while DH taught 2yo DS how to play fetch with the dog.......we foraged for wood for the campfire and DS had toasted marshmallows for the first time! know I sound like an old hippy but it really was idyllic :o

If only I could guarantee no one else was there the next time we go...... mind you its only got 6 pitches so its not like it'd be heaving with people!!!!

Quenelle · 09/05/2012 11:53

I don't suppose you will be revealing its whereabouts MrsMc82? Wink I wouldn't either.

My ideal site would allow no cars. Except for unloading.

There would be trees that provide shade and shelter, but don't drip rain/sap/bird shit onto the tent.

There would be a pub that sold delicious food. But zero tolerance on late night noise.

And nobody would snore.

Slubberdegullion · 09/05/2012 12:19

My fantasy campsite I fear will never exist as it's commercially completely non viable.

I want to combine my favorite site on the Llyn (location, wildness, two fields, tents pitched round the edges) with the ultra clean, modern, underfloor heated, family bathrooms with children's loo and shower area toilet blocks of Germany.

and a shop selling local beer, cheese and meat.

And some sort of entry screen programme for people who play music loudly and fart-arse about at the washing up area.

Finocchio · 09/05/2012 12:47

Basic small site, somewhere remote and beautiful with mountains/coast/lakes. No cars on site. Clean loos. Small campsite shop selling fresh bread or croissants, perhaps a cafe close by for breakfast.
Very few facilities. Quiet at night. No music, no late night parties.

Wasdale Head in the Lakes is close to ideal.

sphil · 09/05/2012 12:54

here Have never been to a better site.

sphil · 09/05/2012 12:58

Sorry wrong link. try again. Looks very glampy in the website but it's not at all.

Sinkingfeeling · 09/05/2012 13:03

One where there are no other people ...

MrsMc82 · 09/05/2012 19:22

Am happy to share - just cos you're all super-lovely - just pinky promise that you'll not to tell everyone - ok? :o :o :o
one downside for some people might be that it is right on a road (between the field and the woods) so it didnt feel massively private but that didnt bother me....... and it was a quiet wee road too and fenced in so didnt worry about dog or ds escaping.................. anyway its here: www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/details.asp?revid=9731

Quenelle · 10/05/2012 10:18

Ah, thanks MrsMc. It does look lovely. And has great reviews.

FlamingoBingo · 15/05/2012 11:45

Some loos, a tap, permission to have campfires, woods nearby or in woods. That's it Smile

signet2012 · 15/05/2012 23:17

Loo's
no club house
no play ground
a river or something water like close by
Animals not the ones that decide to nudge the tent at first light
some showers
no regimented lines
