Me youngest will be 4 or 5 months when the planned camping trips are, is that too young?

so long as you can keep them warm enough then they're never too young I would think.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 17/05/2011 21:56

Not at all.

Take plenty of warm layers including a hat.

It's easier than when they're weaned and on the move.

The worst bit is the night feeds and changes.

Go for it and enjoy Smile

nope, not IMO.
have camped with a baby of that age and it was fine

tigana · 17/05/2011 21:56

nope. small baby = portable. They don't wander off, you can pop them in carrier and stride out to the beach/hills/wherever, they don't demand an ice cream or complain that they are bored when it rains.

Took DS camping with us when he was...um.. must have beeeeeen....2 months. Would have been even easier if I'd managed to BF. (I expressed with squeaky hand pump 2 or 3 times each day and prepped FFs. Having electric hook-up was v handy for this!

feetheart · 17/05/2011 22:00

Nope, not too young. Took DD at about that age and it was dead easy.
SO much harder when they are mobile but have no sense - DS at 10mths having just learnt to walk. Eyes in back of head needed ALL the time as hot drinks. fag ends, cans, bottles, sharp objects, etc, etc (v laidback festival site with lots of non-parents) all acted like a magnet. NOT the most relaxing trip :)

googleberry · 17/05/2011 22:00

Thank you all, am bf so that should be easy enough also on a friends farm only 10 mins from home so if I have enough can just nip home.

dd went in April when she was 5 months.
Every night she had her last nappy change in the (marginally) warmer toilet block, and was wrapped up in many layers + wooly hat.
She slept next to me and DH on mats.
She seemed quite content.
I am hoping she can not move herself around until the end of the camping season, the 2 ds are enough to keep an eye on.

VivaLeBeaver · 17/05/2011 22:07

No, dd was eight weeks. Then at four months we camped in switzerland for a month, no ehu either.

MayDayChild · 17/05/2011 22:10

make sure you have proper insulation under baby - the cold comes from the ground so you need them off the ground by several layers!
We took DD at 11 months in a special tent like travel cot. It had one of those thin air filled camp mattresses for a base. She had on a vest, babygrow, winter grobag and a blanket. By 3 am she was a little ice block and woke up crying so she came in our air bed with 14 tog duvet.
next day we got extra duvet and folded it up under her cot. also added a fleece babygrow plus another duvet on top of the growbag. Then she was fine!!
It was early sept in suffolk
defo to a cotton hat!

ShowOfHands · 17/05/2011 22:12

DD was 8 weeks the first time we took her. It was flipping brilliant and really easy with a non-mobile baby. Just have to keep them warm.

Mum and dad took me to France camping at 6 weeks old. My grandmother was livid! :o

The youngest i've taken was 9m and not crawling far. It's great fun though, the earlier under canvas the better IMHO.

(bathtub groundsheets are great for containing toddlers, they can only escape through the door!)

Took my 4.5 month old away for weekend camping in very early October (!). We were in a camper van, so quite a bit warmer than sleeping on the floor. It was fine, just wrap up v warmly, and you can bring the baby in to bed with you if you feel he/she's not warm enough. Worst bit is defo exposing yourself to the cold night air if breastfeeding brrrr.

stinkypinky · 18/05/2011 17:57

So easy if bfing. EXCEPT the bf poos were a bit much - take clothes you would not mind chucking. I took DD2 at 9 weeks - she will be toddling this season, and will be a challenge! Practice feeding lying down.

DoodleAlley · 18/05/2011 18:01

Oh while people are on here I'm going camping at a relatively basic site with a two year old on Friday. Any tips?

googleberry · 18/05/2011 21:52

Once they're on the move, take lots more clothes than you think you can possibly need!
