is it possible to go camping just me and ds(6) without a car?

the two of us went 2 summers ago when he was 4 and we both loved it, but we had the car then and so had all our luxuries like blow up bed and lots of nice food etc

is it possible with a 6 year old to get somewhere just using trains and the minimal amount of which i would have to carry?

you could stay in pods. i wouldn't bother if i had to drag a tent. take bikes instead

i just looked at Haven for a quote as i thought if its somewhere where there is a pool, amusements, entertainment, supermarket it will be more convenient without a car and lots of local stuff to do. nearly £400 for a week for a basic pitch! and that was term time as i couldn't find availability for summer hols to get a quote. prob a further £200 on top

looks like its gunna be the old fashioned traditional camping if i do do it

what would the main necessities be?

juicy could someone you know not take you in the car and drop you at campsite and collect you again?

My friends without a car bring a luggage trolley like this and pile everything on it. Easy peasy with a six year old I'd have thought. He can wear a rucksack with his clothes in it. Basically, expect to be fairly grubby all week but it doesn't matter. There is a packing list on here somewhere - that's quite useful.

I managed to take 4 dc camping on the train. It was hard work because of the weight of the tent but we did manage ok. Have to say, never again but that is only because of tent size needed for 5 of us.

Most definitely. Think Duke of Edinburgh.

Tent 2 or 3 person but not a popup, needs to pack right down.
rollmats (try say Decathlon for small-packing selfinflating mat or borrow some)
sleeping bags well stuffed down
one-canister stove
Small cookpan set or mess tins, mugs
Few clothes/necessities
headtorch
Swiss Army knife
Picnic blanket

If you think you might get cold at night, thermals take up less room than blankets.

Trolley case is brilliant idea.

I have a pop up which I can carry on my back so don't discount them. I find the fact that I can get the tent up really quickly on my own is a massive advantage as it stops him wandering off getting bored

cool thanks everyone for your responses. i was hoping to go abroad this year but my money situation looks a bit crap so would like to go camping rather than not have a holiday at all

i could consider asking someone taking me and collecting me at the end. Im sure i could get my dad or sis or someone to do that for me, which would save a lot of worry about packing light!
