Campfire food

Ds is asking to make something he made at Cub Camp: they rolled dough around sticks and held it over the fire to cook. When it was cooked, they slid it off the end of the stick and filled the cavity with jam.

Any recipes?

I could trial-and-error it, but I'm not terribly good at any dough other than bread dough because it would have to be dairy-free.

ohhh, I remember that!!! Blimey, I was a Young Leader and I used to do it with cubs, guides and scouts (brownies were too wussy young) Wink
All our recipes are dairy free, I'll see what I can find. Back in a bit :)

P.S back in the eighties we called it 'snakes on a stick'

Hmm

Australian Dampers-just like scone mix-am sure someone will be along with the recipe in a bit.My filing system is not great and will take ages to find Blush

one version I've found says "3 parts water (by volume) to 10 parts self raising flour with a sprinkle or pinch of salt." but I'm fairly certain we used marg in ours. Possibly nearer the mark would be a simple pastry dough, but make it slightly more 'sticky' than if you were going to make a pie or tarts etc at home, iyswim. Still simple marg, flour and water all the same :)

scone mix is just the same but put 2oz of sugar in after you've rubbed in the marg & flour. To do df I just use either water or soya milk instead of cows milk. It doesn't affect the taste or the cooking ime.
