Dutch ovens are the bees knees.I even cook n mine at home during the summer when its too hot to put the oven on. Anything you can cook on a stove you can do in a dutch oven. Ive made bread, cakes (line dutch oven with greased foil first tho, voice of experience here)Ive baked whole chickens and made roasties, roast beef as well as the usual stews slow cooks etc.
You heat up your charcoal briquettes till they are white hot and flames died down, just like they would before you put them in your bbq. At camp I keep oven at side of campfire,at home I put it on a slab in my back yard.
For a 10 inch dutch oven you need 19 briquettes for 325F, 21 for 350, 23 for 375 etc,you need twice as many on the bottom as n the top(325F = 13 on the bottom under the oven and 6 on the lid).To prevent burning and hotspots turn the oven 1/4 turn every 15 mins and at same time turn the lid 1/4 turn in the opposite direction, dont lift the lid any higher than you need to till the food is cooked. For stews etc you ban rake some embers out your fire and sit it on them, just remember to stir quite often
At the risk of sounding like a dutch oven snob, I have 3 in different sizes and I stack em one on top of the other and can cook a stew, pudding and bread a t same time or meat veg and spuds. The smaller one sits on the briquettes on the lid of the one under it iyswim
Literally any recipe you can ccok in the home you can cook in a dutch oven when out camping just remember to use extra oil in veggies or vegan recipes cos you must NEVER use soap on a dutch oven or you need to re season it.
At the end of the season coat it well with olive or veg oil and put a folded paper towel inside and a couple between the lid and the base,it will prevent rust.
Ok people lecture over
but I LOVE my dutch oven and want other people to love theirs too,Its way cheaper than switching the stove on too if you use it at home
