what does your wriggly 2.5 yr old sleep on?

We have not been away camping yet this year but have a few trips planned. Last year DD slept in a pop up travel cot on a camping mat, no probs. She has outgrown it really. I had planned to put her on a blow up kids travel bed. However she slept on it at the weekend at a pals house and was in a crazy position everytime a checked her (mostly, bum in the air and head on the floor) and woke up at 5am all tangled and cross.
So any tips? The kids sleep together in one section, DS sleeps like the dead on a camping mat and sleeping bag.

Our wriggly 3.5 yr old slept very well on one of these. Only problem with it is that the bumpers make it quite substantial - but with only 3 of us in a 4+ man tent that wasn't a huge problem. We got her a sleep pod as well. She seems comfy and sleeps pretty well - and the pinkness is definitely popular...

We put our, very wriggly, DS on a double air bed. He does sometimes fall off but it is usually OK.

Ooh thats great. I think the bumpers may just keep her confined! And completely squash her bro!

We just cover the floor of the sleeping pod with the foam camping mats. The kids both sleep fine and it doesn't matter which way they end up.

Tangle - that airbed looks ideal for stopping our 2.5yo DS from rolling/climbing all over us in the night. Is the base insulated or do you still need a mat? If so,we have a wee Airic we can use.

The base is a normal airbed - not too thick but DD's never complained. We do tend to take her duvet as well (think its about a 4 tog, full size single) thinking that if she gets cold we can wrap it around her sleeping bag - but we've rarely needed to do that. We were in Dorset at the end of April and she said she was plenty warm with just bed / single layer of duvet / sleeping bag.

Thanks for that, I be buying one and a gelert sleeping pod too. Just need a way to stoplight entering the tent at 5am now...

I was going to mention the Kampa Airlock's as well, I see I've been beaten to it Grin I've just bought one for my two and a half year old, going to try it out in a few weeks during a week long camping trip. I've also been wondering about insulation underneath, was thinking maybe a sheepskin on top of the airbed underneath him? Space in the car will be very limited. Any thoughts? (He'll be in a Gelert Pioneer Junior sleeping bag which seems pretty warm.)

Oh, by the way: 5am dawn light: I hang thin but dark coloured indian cotton throws over the inner tent he'll be in, and fix them with big nappy pins. It helps somewhat with the light, especially as my tent is cream!

We're camping in a couple of weeks with three DCs under the age of 4, including our wriggly 2.5yr old and our 3m old because we're crazy and like to be sleep deprived wherever possible so will let you know how it goes, but we're planning on squooshing all five of us into our 2-berth (4-man) pod bit, but taking down the curtain and having two double mattresses on the floor bound together somehow and all just slotting in together Confused Confused Confused!!

bilblio · 15/05/2011 22:37

We cover the floor of DD's pod with a picnic mat, and a blanket or 2, and she's in her sleeping bag.

She lays next to a lovely wee airic! Hmm :0

I'm hoping when she's older she'll learn to sleep on it rather than fidgetting so much!
On the plus side it means I can crawl in there in the middle of the night if she wakes and I've got something comfy and warm to sleep on without having to drag my sleeping mat into her. :o

airbed and sleeping bag in one

The only thing is our airbed(s) popped so DC's sleep on thermarests in where the airbed should be. But they work really well
