recommendations for camping sites in lake district

Friends and us are wanting to go camping in the lake district over the 3 days weekend end of may. i suspect we are not alone!
between us we have four children ranging form almost 1 to just about 5 years old.
Also we have a tent but our friends would prefer the comfort of a mobile-home or whatever it is called (mini home?). A bit like a caravan though it belongs to the camping IYKWIM.
Can you recommend us with a camping that is clean and friendly with both tent and mobilehome?

Many thanks!!

The difficulty is many sites in the lakes don't take bookings. So it is quite difficult getting in nowadays as camping seems more popular than ever. Also I am now tied to school holidays and finishing times.

One of the Castlerigg sites in Keswick used to be good it also a accomodates both. But it's a case of first come first served. As you go up the hill it is the one on the right (the website has an old red phone box shown near the entrance).

Fisherground. Has its own stop on the miniature railway. Beautiful.

Braithwaite we stay in Braithwaite every year in a cottage, but having recently embraced camping we checked out this site for future visits. It looked nice.

But you can't book.

sorry I messed up the link

Fisherground is indeed gorgeous but a) don't think it takes caravans and b) gets seriously heaving on bank holidays - get there early.

Yes, Fisherground does get busy but it is so so lovely.

Tostaky - Not sure if your friends have a campervan or need to rent a mobile home/static caravan. Fisherground campsite takes tents and camper vans and they also have lodges to rent (fisherground.co.uk)

thansk a lot for your replies!
we are looking at castleriggs. great suggestion!

i was looking at fisherground and also syke farm in butteremere... i didnt realise you could rent lodges, will check again.

Another question, we are in london so we were planning to go from london on friday eve and arrive late at night (about 1am). is it something that can be done or is the camping going to be closed?

Thanks

re. arriving late I'm guessing it would depend on the individual campsite and you loose nothing by asking - but tbh I'd be surprised if they'd want to see you at 1am. Many sites have noise policies at night and many ask you not to drive on site between certain hours, all to try and avoid disturbing other campers.

for example, Fisherground's policy:
[[http://www.fishergroundcampsite.co.uk/page9.html As we have a zero tolerence for noise after 10.30pm we only allow groups of up to 3 families.

Our barrier closes at 9pm and re-opens at 8am.]]

If you need to arrive in the area that late you might be better off finding a cheap room for the night on the motorway and getting to the site early on Saturday morning.

It is a looooong drive from London just for a weekend! Have you considered the Peaks, plenty of lovely campsites there and a much more manageable drive.

If you arrive at Fisherground Saturday morning on a bank holiday I would be pretty amazed if you would get in tbh. A great deal of their bank holiday clientele come from Liverpool so would be arriving earlier on the Friday evening.

Is there any nice camping in the peak district? Our friends live in Sheffield and say that lake district is better albeit further. Any good suggestions for the peak district?
We were going to go to castleriggs though as fisherground looks too busy. Thanks

Could your friends get there during the day on the Friday, or early in the evening? If so, would be worth calling the site (wherever you wind up!) and asking if they could book for you as well when they arrive - can't think of anything worth than doing such a long drive to find out there's no room at the inn when you get there.
