We have just come back from our first ever camping trip and we loved it!
Now we know we are definitely going again, its time to find a good tent.

So what's the best make to go for?
I think the options at the moment are a brand new wynnster Marseille 9 or a second hand outwell Vermont xl or Hartford xl.

Help me choose! Is it best to get a new one or second hand?

Thanks in advance!

I have the Harford XL, we find it too big and I don't like putting it up. Last year we bought a HI-gear Mojave 5 and it is fab for weekends, goes up quickly and was great in really bad winds.

We just got the Vango Tigris 800 (2011 model) with footprint, carpet and enclosed canopy for £479. 4 bedrooms, good size living space then another good size space in the canopy area. It is easy to put up (flexi-poles) which is a very important point for me!

We had the hartford XXL - great tent but the pods are small and it takes forever to put up. However I am now selling if you're interested!!!!

Recommendations really depend on what you are looking for.

Thanks thisisyesterday, dh is insisting on a brand new one.....sue he thinks we are made of made of money!

I think we will probably go with the wynnster, as it seems like a good size but not too expensive :) thanks for all the recommendations, keep them coming, we won't be able to afford one for a good few months yet!

I would go to a big camping shop and look at the tents they have up. Or can you borrow one for now and have a look at the others on the campsite.

If you are buying new you really don;t want to get it wrong.

There are lots of things to look at:

material - nylon, tends to be cheaper, lighter and pack up small, though some swear by canvas and would camp in nothing else.

size - how big is the foortprint - with the kind of camping you do, will you need to book double pitches? Will it fit in your car?

time - how long will it take you to errect? Not a problem if you're going to stay put for a while, but if you want to tour around or do quick 2 nighters, this could be a huge factor (we have changed from an Hartford XXL because of this)

Type - tunnel / dome, 1 large room / several pods - both have their advantages, disadvantages.

putting it up - will it need 2 people or can 1 do it easily?
