Ok i need some help .I need a new tent and we do like the built in groundsheet now here is the akward part .I need the door way bit to be able to lay flat so can get my wheelchair in .Bedroom bit thats fine as can hirl myself in to that .

But need door access and enough room inside ideally oh and needs to sleep 5 of us so ds1 and ds2 one room dd and ds3 another and one for me though i could share with younger 2 dc ok .oh and resonably easy to put up becuase its going to be mostly ds1 and ds2 doing with me directing .

Ds1 and ds2 are 17,14 and tall so im not quite a wicked mum

I have a vango 500 which does have a built in groundsheet and hence a 'lip' BUT I have also bought the extension which attaches to the middle pole of the tent either side (tunnel tent). The extension does come with a groundsheet, has windows AND zips up at the front giving you a very roomy living extension. Am posting from phone so can't post a link easily - the tent does sleep 5 in two berths plus a living area. You could then store your wheelchair in the extension. Any use do you think ?

notwavingjustironing · 05/05/2011 08:51

Also the tent is really easy to put up - 10 mins on my own!

JustCallMeGrouchy · 05/05/2011 08:55

thank you problem is then getitng from extension to the middle bit then into the bedrooms and am bit to old to bum shuifflle or roll though it will give the kids a good laugh .hmm an guessing the extension not built in groundsheet am not a fan of draughts

was looking more i theres one that unzips in the main doorway area

Do bell tents have a lip in the doorway?

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 05/05/2011 14:11

We have a Vango Tigris 800 which has folding down groundsheet bits in the doorways. They unclip when you open the door and you clip them back up in the evening.

It's an eight berth, 2 bedrooms at either end. Me and dh can put it up and we are useless(!) so I'm sure your Ds's could do it.

TBH overall I'm not overly keen on the tent as there aren't many windows but it may be worth looking at other Vango tents see if they have the same clip up doorway system thingyConfused

We have a Kampa tent aswell but that does have a lip.

JustCallMeGrouchy · 05/05/2011 14:34

thank you that does look like a good possiablity Can lift the divide at one end an dhave little two in and one big room or them right next to me and couple of smelly teens at the other end .

Will see if theres one out there taht i can go see .and will try emailing Vango see what else has the clip up doorway

our orchy 600 also has a flap in the SIG at the doorway so that it can fold flat/clip up.

LittleSkink · 10/05/2011 08:29

depends on your budget, used a Cabanon Pyramid 6 would be good if you can find one, maybe £150. Canvas too which is much better for the kids

New tent, Hypercamp Paramos would be really easy to erect with good space and decent Canvas, about Eu500

goog luck, let us kow how you get on

JustCallMeGrouchy · 10/05/2011 13:08

Thank you have had good look an couple ideas but am begiing to think that camping in tent days are almost over .

more i think about it more the pratical side be no good and ds1 does not always want to come away now at 17 .so tent put up will not be doable really with just ds2 (and reckon only few years left with him camping ) dd only 8 and she is really tiny and limited what i can physically do from a chair .

So options are give up completley Sad
Switch to sites that have tents set up already though suspect lips etc a issue .
Or wonder if there are sites where can camp for couple weeks or more in summer that way can get someone to set tent up then come back at end and take down .But would need site with things to do if having lazy day

is there anywhere local to you that do wigwam holidays?they are pretty cheap around here, and im sure they must do ones suitable for wheelchair users :)

JustCallMeGrouchy · 10/05/2011 13:24

Realsing just how hard it is when not another adult .i amnged for years as a sp and then the kids helped as they got older .But now mor elook into it more realise can not do like we used to [sa]

JustCallMeGrouchy · 10/05/2011 13:30

would it be possible to ' doctor ' a tent yourself to make the flap at the door removeable - on velcro or something?

we have a vango icarus 600 for 5 of us and its fab, takes us about 15 mins to put up,i can do it myself with my 6yo helping,so your boys should manage ok,
there is a lip going into the bedroom, but again you could attach velcro to solve this?

Needanewname · 11/05/2011 20:35

Although I'm loathe to advertise belltent.co.uk (terrible customer service) they do one called the emporer that may fit the bill for you - it is pricey though.

If you know anyone in europe you could always get one from Obelink (they do them there too), will find the links for you.

Needanewname · 11/05/2011 20:38

the standard one

the deluxe one

standard one from Holland

deluxe one from Holland

If you are able to make it over to Obelink, they are really helpful and the reserved one for me over the phone

TheHumanCatapult · 12/05/2011 10:54

thank you that would be ideal and with liftable groundsheets it would mean we could do a long summer camp with just needing help to put up and take down at the end .

Something to save up for next year I think

Tangle · 12/05/2011 20:57

We've stayed with Canvas and Eurocamp before now, and neither of their tents had sewn in groundsheets so no raised lip at doorways. There is a lip around the bedroom inners. Canvas might be a better option as the layout is such that the double bed is side on and comes right to the edge of the relevant inner. From a position point of view I'm pretty sure my mother would be able to get to the right place to transfer, although she'd find it very low (btw, I admire you or still even trying - my mother is much more of the "well, you see, the problem is" persuasion [pulls-hair-out-in-frustration-emoticon!]Blush slight digression there...). In the Eurocamp tents the door is at the end of the bed and there's a metal rail to navigate.

The price differentials on being an independent camper (just pitch costs) vs. staying with Canvas, etc, can be remarkably small.

TheHumanCatapult · 12/05/2011 21:33

thank you will have a look .Am not worried about lips to bedrooms as can just throw myself over them but doorway is a pita in and out
