does anyone use them? are they any good~

am looking at ways (any ways) to keep my load down when we go away for half term. towels take up quite a lot of room, so was considering these... but not sure if they're any good

I was thinking about this too. After camping this weekend when towels never quite dried, I think it would be a good idea to test one of those little towels on DS

PrettyCandles · 02/05/2011 21:16

I bought a dog towel version of them (I dont have a dog, just happened to come across it while buying nit-combs in a pet shop, and saw that it was cheaper and bigger than the 'human' ones). It's very good. Personally, I hate the feel of it, but the dc like it and think it's soft and cuddly. It dries people very quickly, the one towel was fine for 3 dc and 1 adult on the beach. And then I used it as a sun shelter as it dried in the breeze.

i was thinking of trying them for the kids to start with as well. is that mean? lol

Oh, a dog towel is a good idea. I think we'll have a look at the weekend.

PurveyorOfBaloney · 02/05/2011 21:23

When we went backpacking we used large scarves/sarong type things, the ones made of polyester (absolutely no cotton). They are very floaty and thin, but adequate enough to dry you down. When hung up they dry within minutes and pack down to almost nothing. And the big advantage is you can actually wear them as sarong/skirt/beach cover up etc. if needed.

Was the best bit of holiday planning advice we were ever given.

I've just ordered one!

theweescowlyone · 02/05/2011 22:53

I want to avoid the ones with nano silver/anti-microbial stuff in them. Are the doggy ones OK in that respect, please?

PrettyCandles · 02/05/2011 22:55

I very much doubt it has anything fancy in it - it only cost about £10, half the price of the sporty ones.

beaconhouse · 02/05/2011 23:02

hi,
i use the towels for camping and agree there not as snuggly but the fact they take up so little room and dry so quickly (even quicker if spreed out inside the car parked in the sun) makes them so worth while.
i also use them to take the children to their swimming lessons as again take up so little room.

theweescowlyone · 02/05/2011 23:03

Thanks, PC. Pets at Home it is, then.

confuseddotcodotuk · 02/05/2011 23:08

They are amazing. I've got three of the fleecey ones as opposed to microfibre and have been using them for two years now instead of normal towels. I used a normal towel again yesterday and it just did not dry me what-so-ever and my hair! It was sopping wet and would not towel dry!

You can get some which cling to dry skin (on hands/feet/elbows/etc) which can be a horrid feeling, but the more expensive ones won't do this. You can pick up a cheap one in millets, £2.99 I paid for mine, works like a charm but is a 'catchy' one in regards to dry skin.

The actual microfibre mini ones work like chamois (is that right, the car polishing thing?) and are also amazing if you're okay with a tiny thing that doesn't cover your body.

jamaisjedors · 03/05/2011 08:01

Glad to see good reviews - they were on offer in our Decathlon at the weekend and I took the plunge and bought 4.

Haven't tested them out yet, swimming is a good tip.

Ceolas · 03/05/2011 09:21

Where did you get the fleecey type confused?

confuseddotcodotuk · 03/05/2011 09:31

Ceolas: by the fleecey type I mean the commonly cheaper version, they're bigger than actual microfibre towels and I suppose the thing under microfibre (if that makes sense) but very cheap. I can't find any online but you can get them for £2.99 in millets (they're own brand) and from most outdoor shops.

It's really winding me up that I can't find any anywhere! They probably aren't called microfibre which is probably why I'm having trouble Grin

confuseddotcodotuk · 03/05/2011 09:32

AHA! I found it! These are what I have:
www.mountainwarehouse.com/travel/accessories/travel-towels/micro-towelling-travel-towel-giant-p2691.aspx

I have the giant one too, big enough to cover me as I dash from the shower to my room! :D

jamaisjedors · 03/05/2011 10:17

We have these ones - don't know if they are microfibre or what!

PrettyCandles · 03/05/2011 16:53

I think what confuseddot has are the same as the pet towels - the site she's linked to appears to have a sale on - which makes them the same price.

Do yours have a hanging loop, confuseddot? The pet one does - very useful - and I would expect a towel designed for camount to have one.

I find I can't dry my hair with it. Just blotting is ok, but rubbing or turbaning knots my hair up really badly.

PrettyCandles · 03/05/2011 16:55

I blame the iPhone. I think my post makes sense, but if it doesn't I'll repost.

confuseddotcodotuk · 03/05/2011 17:24

Probably pretty much the same. I know they do the proper microfibre ones for animals too, and I'v known people to use those car things as towels as well as they're the same stuff just cheaper.

It is getting harder to dry my hair with them now as it's getting long I must admit, but I still am turbaning it up and it will be mostly dry within a couple of minutes. I'm a convinience girl more than anything! Grin

Mine doesn't have a hanging loop, it would be handy actually, never thought of that before!

thisisyesterday · 03/05/2011 18:03

wow! for £7.99 I have ordered 3, for the kids so will see how we get on.
and have added 2 of the "mega" ones as well.

Hope DP doesn't moan about them lol

Ceolas · 03/05/2011 23:43

Do you think these would be dreadful? I like the idea of having different colours for each person! Grin

jamaisjedors · 04/05/2011 08:23

I got the Decathlon ones in different colours for exactly that reason ceolas.
