We did Latitude last year, our first festival with DD (she was 5). We really enjoyed it, so much so that we're going back again this year.

It's a lot more organised than Glasto or V (our other 2 festival experiences) in terms of facilities, designated camping areas etc. and there were loads of things for the kids to do in their arena, which is right next to Family Camping and opens earlier than the rest of the festival. Despite the 2 rapes/assaults last year, which was horrible, we felt very safe and the stewards were scrupulous about only letting family campers into the family area.

DD really enjoyed herself making stuff and playing games, and wasn't the least bit whingey all weekend. Outside the children's arena there was so much that she also enjoyed - a performance of The Comedy Of Errors where all the players were costumed as animals held her enraptured, the little stages hidden in the woods fascinated her and the dance workshops were great fun. She also loved Mumford and Sons! There was lots of stuff that was just 'there', iyswim, stilt-walkers, performance artists, stuff like that, which she loved.

However... we went knowing we would meet up with my sister and her family, if we hadn't had them to share out the 'I want to go and see Swan Lake, your turn to take the kids to play' stuff I don't know how it would have gone with just the 3 of us. I'm also thinking that we won't get away with the Comedy tent now she's 6...

Food was horrifically expensive (fixed price cartel going on) and very little there that DD (not sure how but we appear to have raised a very dull child who won't countenance anything other than meat & 2 veg) would actually eat - she lived on sausage in a bun and strawberry crepes for 3 days! - so although the adults enjoyed the food (esp the Caribbean Kitchen stall) she didn't and we are taking our camping kitchen this time around.

We didn't go for the babysitting Tipi as we weren't sure how DD would take it, and as the weather was good (except for 1 downpour while we were in the Comedy Tent) it was very nice sitting outside the tent with a glass of wine in the evening while the kids played (take a winebox, they don't allow glass on site). Not sure how well it would work in the rain. We took glowsticks and those glowy balloons and they went down well too!

The family camping loos are 'proper' and very clean. loads of loo roll etc., but the showers were FREEZING! They had a shower area in the Market as well, we didn't use them so I don't know if they were any better.

Can't wait for Suede, OMD and Echo this year...
