OMG - the WIND this weekend!

We have been in Devon, near Bantham this weekend, on a lovely but very exposed site. I couldn't believe the wind on Friday and Saturday nights - we are in a camper van and folding camper, not even a tent, but it was soooo noisy. Felt like being shaken inside a carrier bag! Lashing rain as well. Decided to come home a day early as it was really too windy for comfort - drove a few miles east ( we only live in Somerset) into glorious sunshine and no more than a fresh breeze.

I love the Dartmouth/Salcombe area but this is the second time we've been when it's been horrendously windy ( and we're really quite hardy, honest ). Does anyone know a sheltered campsite in this general area?

i was in sw scotland and it was really windy but beautifully sunny. my sis in wicklow said the same. seems everywhere was fairly windy.

friends had a yurt collapse on top of them (snigger at the glampers!)

I was in Bala by the lake, its was very windy there too but beautiful sunshine.

We were in a small pop up and apart from a bit of flapping it was fine, I did park the car in front of the tent though to give us some shelter.

It was interesting putting the pop up away in the wind thoughGrin.

Camped in Hampshire this weekend, came back this morning, it was pretty windy last night but has been stronger today (live in Hants too). At least it was good for getting all the washing dry this afternoon.

The only thing I really minded about it was not being able to sleep because of the noise. Awake from 1am the first night and 4 am the second Shock

Well if you will only take baked beans to eat...

Was near Tonbridge Wells this weekend, not sure if I'm sun burnt or wind burnt, either way I have a very red face and sore nose!!!

Was in a bell tent so no nosiey flapping for me, in fact was lovely and relaxing inside.

Fab weekend, only 3 weeks til the next one!!!

DH and I took his recently acquired bargain boat to Bala; he ended up at the other end of the lake for three hours because it was too windy to sail back...Blush

We spent the weekend on the east coast (not camping). We had bright blue sky the whole time but it was incredibly windy. Spent the morning watching kite surfers - they were the only ones who ventured out. Found out later on that one of them had got into trouble and drowned Sad

Our first attempt at camping since pre-DS was on the east coast last year. After spending an hour trying to erect our tent in the wind we gave up. Flipping pole broke when we were taking it down Angry We freecycled the tent because it was incredibly old and not suitable for us anyway, so are now inbetween tents.

Am now considering a) a canvas tent and b) not attempting to camp on the east coast again.

I can recommend a bell tent in strong winds, there was no danger of our collapsing, however none of the other tents looked in danger of collapsing wither! It was certainly quieter than our old nylon one though!

concus with needanewname

you can't beat Canvas tents, much more pleasant to be in and not so affected by the wind

we have Dutch Pyramid (in Holland they call then Storm Tenten) and have sat cozy in our tent while our neighbours were flattened or abandoning - remember July 2010 ?

quenell - have a google for "Joy of Canvas" website, tonnes of ideas for Canvas tents on there

Quenelle · 10/05/2011 12:43

Thanks LittleSkink. I'll have to read the Joy of Canvas for ammunition. I can't convince DH. He thinks they're more expensive, heavier and take longer to dry.

Needanewname · 10/05/2011 13:03

THey can be heavier (though our old Outwell was as heavy as the BT) the costs depend on which one you go for, BT cheaper than the Wolf lake which is what I originally wanted (oh and who cares, its soooooooooo much better!) and to be fair we haven;t yet camped in torrential rain, but ours was as dry as the nylons in the morning after night time rain (and wind!)
