I looking for ideas for camping meals.

Do you have a fridge?

firsttimer78 · 26/04/2011 20:25

A big bowl of chilli (meat or veggie, whatever your preference) that just needs re-heating. Served with sour cream and tortilla chips.

yeah we have fridge, and electric. Thinking of taking slow cooker?? Will be cooking for 4 adults and 5 kids for 4 days

On the first day we usually have something that has defrosted en route out of the freezer (casserole or similar). The next we have fresh pasta or dried, sundried tomato paste/pesto, onions, sweetcorn etc. Grated cheese.
Breakfast is either cereal/ toast or a fry up.
Other favourites are the cooking pastes you can get from sainsburys ie moroccan/ indian/green thai curry with veg or meat and rice. Sausage and mash.
For pudding we have syryp or ginger cake and custard or good old angel delight (just for the nostalgia of reliving camping memories from my childhood).
oh speaking of which my mums favourite meal when camping was the leftover cheese sandwiches from lunch, dipped in beaten egg and fried, after me and my brothers had been put to bed.

Last time we tried to eat a defrosted bolognese but it hadn't defrosted properly and I was trying to bash it apart! So we'll leave it for the second day this time! (V annoying!). My plan for this time is to have a packed lunch for when we arrive - french stick, cold meat, salad, crisps. Then I don't even have to set up the cooker! Hot dogs of course with onions, mustard and tom sauce! For a BBQ night, any of those ready made kebabs from the supermarket, often spiced up - the children don't always like these so I get thin sausages too - we have this with ready chopped corn on the cob. Tinned meatballs in gravy with mash and peas - we would never normally eat this! Tuna sandwiches with salad, cucumber. Small jacket potatoes on the BBQ with beans and grated cheese. Bacon, tomato and cheese Staffordshire oatcakes. Oh and English breakfast for an evening meal!

Of course - curry, rice and naans!

hi

just wondered what those of you without electric and fridge do? i struggle with ideas...

we have a kettle bbq and a single gas stove... we are going again this weekend and need some inspiartion!

dreamingofsun · 28/04/2011 20:18

justcallme - we have 2 single gas stoves and it allows you to do loads more. if you use the barbecue as well its really easy to do a meat/veg/starch meal. we use lots of tinned beans/sweetcorn, pasta and rice and then put meat onto barbecue (kept in the cool box and sometimes taken frozen to reduce trips to the shop).

we take a frozen dish for night 2 (no elect- 1 single burner w'ends, double burner longer trips)
1st night takeaway or baguette + salad+ meat/cheese - or

stir fry using ready cooked noodles- marinated chicken/fish/prawns in soy &garlic& ginger plus tub chopped veg from the fridge or supermarket... can all be cooked in one pan

tinned curry+ ready cooked rice - quick option also only one pan

another camping favourite - bacon (local mix of smoked and unsmoked chopped not too small) tin of tomatoes chopped or passata + tin butter/cannelini beans in water- fry bacon for a bit til mainly cooked add toms and beans (including the water) cook for a while - have with pasta...which you can cook first then mix in with the sauce to warm through.....have also chucked spinach in for some greens Smile

carbonara- cook bacon chopped into small bits - put to one side - cook pasta then stir in couple eggs, tub cream , handfull grated cheese and bacon bits - not healthy but lovely!

we find the trick with single burner is ready cooked carbs eg rice/noodles or use couscous which you put in hot water then take off and let cook whilst doing other bits of meal... hth

Huge spanish omelette with crusty bread and salad.

Paella

Mushroom risotto, or even better; butternut squash, sage and parmesan risotto.

Chicken, stir fried with jar of sweet and sour/ kung po/ black bean sauce chucked over and rice.

Stir fried veg with egg noodles and oyster sauce.

Covent garden soups with bread followed by a heavy pudding (warming).

For emergencies, "look what we found" meals are surprisingly nice and do not require refrigeration.

Well last time we went we had paella, muscles in wine and cream, spag bol (to be fair that was pre cooked and frozen!) whole baked camembert, veg curry and chicken curry and of course big cooked breakfast - all done on the open fire - mmmmmm
