Kampa Lulworth 6 vs Outwell Nevada M

Having spent a happy morning at the tent shop we have narrowed down our choices to these two tents, they are both the same price so wondered if anyone could recommend either?

DC are 2 and 4 so we'll only be doing fairweather camping, ease of putting up is paramount!

I have the kampa lulworth 6. Love it.

I have put it put with a friend after a couple of glasses of wine :-)

Ooh a reply thanks Grin

I can't now find the Lulworth on sale online anywhere! so slightly concerned that they've been a complete flop and wouldn't be able to get spares if we bought the one we saw in the camping shop...

We have the Kampa Filey 6 which from googling looks almost identicalConfused I think the only difference may be the addition of an annex on the side with the Filey which the Loo goes in!

We are really pleased with our Kampa tent. We had a vango before and the quality of the Kampa is so much better! It's so light aswell, windows everywhere that zip out and with the front opening all the way across it is great!

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 27/04/2011 09:31

Just to add, the big bonus of the kampa Lulworth over the Outwell Nevada M is the canopy at the front. We have found that so useful and really glad we went for a tent with one.

Plus the steel poles. Stronger and easier to thread through the tent IME. Heavier though...

We looked at the Nevada M for a weekend tent but have opted for another Kampa (Frinton 5) because of the steel poles and slightly more space.

I think the Lulworth is the older version of the Croyde 6. We went for a Filey 6 from somewhere selling "possible slight cosmetic seconds" (£359!) but it hasn't arrived yet. Would spares for the Croyde fit?

We've got the Nevada M and are really pleased with it - we got the front awning, which we found extended the usable space significantly so was a good purchase.

We (DH, me and DD - 4) got it to try camping. We wanted something that was nice enough and big enough to give it a fair try. The larger bed room is generous for 2, and DD1 fitted easily in the other (even in one of these). Living space isn't generous though, although the front awning helped a lot. I think it would be snug with 2 DC, especially on wet days. Our long term plan involves getting something a little bigger in canvas.

I can't comment on the strength of the poles on the Nevada (we've had heavy rain but nothing too windy yet), but we haven't found threading them through the tend to be a problem (getting them tensioned is a bit more challenging, mind...). I've seen videos of someone putting it up single handed, but I think I'd struggle and it would take me a long time. With DH its not too arduous - and DD gets to "help" by distributing pegs and hammering (under close supervision).

One thing I saw another family do was have a small pop-up tent for their DC to play in. It was up almost instantly and kept the DC entertained while they got the big tent up and running. Something we're looking into before we go away again :o

We did the same bitingfairy although it was £310 when we bought it last AutumnHmm

The discolouration is very slight and right on top of the roof so you can only see it if you are in the tent stood underneath the right bit. It was a bargain, really pleased with it! Hope you enjoy yours as much as we doSmile

we just sold nevada M - only due to personal circumstances and we thought there was TONS of room! That was for 2 adults and one 3 year old boy. We also had the front extenson carpet and footprint, very cosy - loved it!

MegBusset · 27/04/2011 21:26

Ah, thanks for clarifying the situation with the Lulworth - it's no longer listed on the Kampa website so presumably has been discontinued, they do have some nice models though - I like the look of the Filey but it's pretty heavy (guess that's the steel poles!).

We did think the Nevada M was spacious (compared to our tiny old dome tent of old) but perhaps it won't feel that way with four bodies in? We will probably be weekend campers only for the next few years and staying close to home, so in the event of torrential rain will drive home and worry about getting the tent later Grin

Actually the Nevada XL is quite tempting as well, but might be too big, I'll see if I can get to look at one at the local Go Outdoors...

I think it was when we all wanted to have a lie down on the carpet and in the shade, but not in the bedrooms (as with any synthetic tent they get HOT in the sun) so there was a bit of a breeze - with all our stuff round the sides the amount of carpet space left became a bit of a limited resource. We didn't have the front awning at the time and the site turned out to have NO trees at all so no option to spread a rug out of the tent and sprawl.

That said, we're in no hurry to change it - its big enough to do everything we need it to do for the next couple of years. Once we've got a better idea of the kind of trips we like doing we'll try and pick our tent-of-a-lifetime. But the Nevada M is pretty good for now :)

btw - when I was growing up mum and dad had to put everything in a trailer, by the time we had the full on big frame tent complete with proper carpet (roll of) and (quite literally) a kitchen sink. I'm still trying to develop the skill of packing light, but in the meantime we do tend to have a box or two of "things that might come in useful" but never actually get used Blush

maxybrown · 28/04/2011 08:40

I suppose it does depend on how much stuff you take Grin we zipped the bedroom into one massive one too so we had loads of room in there as well for stuff. But def having the front extension makes huge difference. I prob have pictures from last summer if you want to see them

bitingfairy · 28/04/2011 09:51

MegBusset You sound like me! I started looking at smaller tents, then a bit bigger and then a bit bigger before settling on the Filey. A bit scarey to think what we'd have spent if we didn't have a budget!

Doyouthinktheysaurus Envy I thought we'd got a bargain (still do actually since they're near £600 otherwise Wink ) Glad it's a good tent - still a bit nervous as it's our first!

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 28/04/2011 13:45

MegBusset the massive downside of the Nevada XL IMO is the layout with sleeping at either end. Our last tent had that layout and as on alot of pitches you have to pitch narrow side across the pitch IYSWIM your outlook is rubbish because your doors are side onConfused I can't explain it very well, hope you know what I mean!

Having a tent with main entrance at the front means you can sit sipping wine and people watch to your hearts content...or is that just meGrin

The Filey is a fabulous tent bitingfairy and still a massive bargain.

Big though!!

We are planning to get a weekend tent tooHmm This camping lark is expensive!!

MegBusset · 28/04/2011 16:28

I don't think the Nevada XL has a bedroom at each end iirc - more like an enlarged version of the M.

I have ordered the Kampa brochure for a proper look :)
