so, situation is: lone parent, dog, 1 child.

what do i do about late night/nighttime/early morning wee's?

i wont be able to go once dd is in bed.. cant go in the night and leave her. or in the early morning. if she wakes up in the night a treck to the loo block will probably result in a dog ripping through the tent.

Was thinking bucket with a lid ( where do you buy these) but whats the chance of it tipping over? or DD (5) actually using it and not getting wee everywhere?

Potty is too small.

dont really want to spend £20 on a portaloo thing.

help!

If you line a bucket with a carrier bag, then add either a layer of cat litter, or an opened up value nappy, there will be no liquid to spill as it gets absorbed :)

have not tried this myself...I er, availed myself, one night after a glass of wine, of the privacy the bushes behind the tent had to offer Wink

I know, I know, I bet someone will come on saying if we all did that blah blah but I was alone with kids and dogs in the tent, and at 4am that loo block was some hike away..

kahlua4me · 20/04/2011 19:04

We use a bucket with a lid for kids and me. No way do I want to go out to loo block in middle of the night!
Either put a cheap nappy in the bottom or some loo roll. I put a towel on the floor and bucket on top of that. Never had it fall over.

Bushes behind the tent are fine too as long as nothing likely to bite your bum!

AutumnWitch · 20/04/2011 19:15

Been there :)

Three nappies is more effective than one, open them out or they won't absorb anything, make sure that the bucket is sturdy in case you wobble and have to sit suddenly, double line the bucket with pedal bin liners, newspaper on the floor avoids having to deal with wet towels.

You need an nappy bucket - they come with lids

Enjoy your trip.

We have a luggable loo and use it for night time wees with cat litter in. It fits the gas bottle in for when you pack it in the car, so no wasted space and I use it as a bin during the day.

If the cat litter idea doesn't appeal, try these: www.epsgoggles.com/products/viewproduct_detail.php?prod=49. We line a bucket with them and then tie them up in the morning and dispose of them. They are biodegradable too apparently. They are a bit pricey though but you can probably use each one for more than one night if there is only one of you as there is no smell and you can tie them up during the day. They were a life-saver for me when I was pregnant!

Nappy bucket about £6 from mothercare. I just chuck some dettol and water in it each night and empty down the chemical disposal point each morning.

IloveJudgeJudy · 21/04/2011 14:25

Kalhua = Don't go in the bushes behind the tent. That's horrible. What about the people who use the pitch after you?

OP. use a bucket with a lid. Do what Nikkid said and have a towel or something on the floor around it.

Rosebud05 · 21/04/2011 14:32

My friend had just this dilemma and used the nappy solution.

Apparently, one Sainsbo's eco size 4 holds an adult wee Grin.

Either that or as others say a bucket with a lid that can be sluiced with dettol and emptied each morning.

Have a good holiday!

LittleSkink · 22/04/2011 16:59

miht not help, but used Thetford porta pottis at car boot are rarely expensive and you can sell it on when you have finished wth it for no loss (or maybe even a small profit)

seriously - the biggest difference we ever made to our camping with kids was getting a porta potti (and self inflating mats but didnt need kids for that)

I can honestly we have never peed in the bush. In fact a couple of years ago a whole load of families all went away for a weekend and it turned out my friend had told her DC to do that. It all went quiet, but no one actually said anything to her face, but we all agreed behind her back Blush that it was skanky. She's a guider so that was part of the reason we felt we couldn't.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 25/04/2011 16:47

We have a Portable Loo for longer trips or for sites without toilet facilities and have just ordered a Kampa Khazi for shorter trips and when we have the smaller tent we will be buying.

This weekend we had the big portable loo and and it only got used 4-5 times, 4 by meBlush I have to go at some point every night so can't be without a loo!

The khampa khazi comes with a very stylish cover too so you don't have to look at it all dayGrin
