Wild camping anyone?

Does anyone go wild camping? Particualy by themselves.
I haven't done much in the last 8 months due to a combination of illness (earlier this year I was ill for a couple of months), work being chaotic and the kids having loads of stuff on.

Hopefully after Easter I'll be able to get out more.

If you do where do you like to go?

I need to be more adventerous than the Lake District. I feel like I'm in my comfort zone!

A friend of mine told me last year that there is some kind of law in scotland which means that you have the right to camp in wild areas (as opposed to campsites). I'm not sure what rights you have to camp wildly in England, isn't most of the land owned by someone?

Butterbur · 13/04/2011 17:07

I'm not sure you do have the right to camp wild in most national parks and on/near long distance footpaths.

I did it occasionally, on my own, or with a boyfriend, and never ran into any problems. I think as long as you wait until dusk to throw up a small tent, keep a tidy campsite, and are gone fairly early in the morning nobody will know, or care.

Personally I feel the remoter the better, if you are on your own. The last thing you need is unwanted attention.

The Lake District sounds adventurous to me.

I've never had any problem in the Lakes.
I wouldn't take a Dof E to camp in the Lakes though but if it is just me or me and a mate I don't worry too much.

We go sometimes, with the dc. We have a great time, it's always a highlight of our summer.
You can camp wild on Dartmoor, or in Scotland, or over about 300 m in the Lake District. We have wild camped quite a bit in all 3 of those areas. Generally Dartmoor these days, it's handy for us.

I don't really have the urge to go on my own but all the places we have wild camped have felt quite safe.

Jumbs · 17/04/2011 23:17

Dartmoor here too. I thought it was allowed in most national parks? There are rules though, not within x of a road, not in enclosed land etc.

Anywhere near the coast in cornwall seems to be a big no no, as I discovered in my late teens. The police were down before dawn when we rough camped near Newquay, and moved us on from the beach on another occassion after dark.

Grin at 'some kind of law in Scotland'. It's called the Land Reform [Scotland] Act 2003 and gave us the Scottish Outdoor Access Code. Read all about wild camping here. As long as you're behaving responsibly, you can go where you like...

We wild camped when we went to holy island , obviously this side of the causeway.

also this might help

Some National Parks welcome wild camping, as long as you act responsibly and leave no trace of your visit behind you. Dartmoor have a map of areas where you can camp on common land, and the Brecon Beacons provide a list of farms that welcome campers. In the Cairngorms and Loch Lomond and the Trossachs the Scottish Outdoor Access Code

www.outdooraccess-scotland.com/out-and-about/recreation-activities/wild-camping/

gives everyone the right to wild camp so long as you follow the guidelines.

used to wild camp pre dd but can't be arsed now.

SeaShellsHasSandInHerShoes · 19/04/2011 18:57

Wild camped in Norway alot, pre dc-really cheap way to get round an expensive country :) not done it here though the lakes are tempting

unclefester77 · 05/05/2011 17:07

we wild camp all the time - Scotland mostly because of right to roam law. Loads of fun as long as you're responsible and leave no litter behind, which you wouldn't do anyway. Does get a bit tricky finding water in high summer so we have a water purification kit Grin

unclefester77 · 05/05/2011 17:33

Sorry OP, I've just realised my comment is smug and unhelpful. Some nice places we've wild camped are Arran and Mull, also we've just returned from Northumbria having part wild camped - walked the last leg of the Pennine Way and wild camped the second night and third night as the route runs directly along the border so you only have to turn left off the path and you are in Scotland IYSWIM. I hope you do try it and have fun Smile
