Porthmadog camping sites

we are thinking of going somewhere different this year, usually go to Forest of Dean. Porthmadog was recommended by pet shop man, Black Rock. Any one been? What sort of places to visit near by.
Going for two weeks in summer, me DH, DC's 12 and 7 plus 2 dogs.

Need quietish campsite doesn't need to be much on it as I like going out and about. Toilets and showers preferably newish and very clean! Not too expensive.

Can any one recommend a site please?

We stayed at Black Rock Sands a few years back, nice quiet site, basic but fine amenities, right by the beach. UK campsite reviews here

We had a great time, lots of great beaches, get the Ffestiniog railway, and Portmeirion is nearby too, plus Snowdon of course!

Thanks Meg, will look at that website.

I stayed at tyddyn adi[sp] for 2 nghts with 2 of the Dd's last august.

The location was great a short cycle to the massive beach or you can drive on if you like.

It is opposite the Haven site where we had friends staying, we spent a lot of time with them.

The site is basic, it has grass, a stream and a mountain/hill behind it.

Didn't try the showers we had one in our friends caravan. The toilets were a bit grim, they were cleaned once a day but sometimes there was no loo roll. Also there was only cold water for hand washing and no hand dryers or paper towels or soap.
Ok maybe I have been spoilt but I do like some soap and hot water to wash my hands after I have been to the loo.

We left a day early as the weather turned and the field we were in was getting very boggy.

I don't think I would go back but if you can handle basic I only paid £12 a night.

I reccomend here gwynant.com whenever any of my friends want somewhere in Wales. You need to be able to drive to get there as it is a little out in the sticks, but its only 12 miles from Portmadog

They are lovely and friendly and very laid back. They've recently had a new shower and toilet block, and a new reception. Its a lovely place, and very reasonable

I couldn't cope with the toilet block I'm afraid Ineedalife, thanks for posting though.

ISJ - I'll look at GWYNANT - thank you.

Not sure on campsites but there are some good places to visit around there. A trainline runs along the coast giving you easy access to places like Portmeirion, Criccieth Castle, Harlech and Aberdovey.

kitkat1000 · 22/03/2011 22:20

we stayed at the haven site on black rock but all the sites along there access the same beach. We went in May 2005 and got fab weather and loved it, went portmeirion (lovely), cricceth (worth a visit) and into porthmadog (a bit dull imo). I loved the area!

Jaynerae · 23/03/2011 22:09

We found one, reviews on uk campsite website are all positive, it's called Eisteddfa caravan and camping site. Price looks good.

Does seem loads to do in surrounding areas, so we are booking it!

Thanks all!

Eiseddfa is lovely - you may have read my review on ukcamping if not then search on here and you'll come across it. Drew and Karen are v good, v hands on.
Sorry I couldn't advise sooner but I don't get here much these days - hectic isn't the word!
Strongly advise chips from the Castle chippy in Criccieth eaten on the beach followed by an ice cream from Cadwalladers.
The head across the peninsula to Morfa Nefyn and stroll along the beach to the TY Coch pub (google their webcam - when it's light obviously!) for a pint/ more ice cream on the beach before walking back across the headland.

Any more questions about the LLeyn please ask - and I'll try to be more prompt next time! Blush

Jaynerae · 26/03/2011 18:03

Thanks Lucycat, sound wonderful, certainly seems loads to do, will defo try the chips!

And do drive to BeddGelert for ice creams: I wouldn't recommend the Forest holidays site tehre becuase of the river and a horrid scare we had, but the ice cream shop and a walk through the village is soemthing everyone should schedule in.... esp. for the sake of 8 miles! And if its raining (ROFL- this is North Wales after all) you can get a decent pizza there too.

We went last year; fully intend to return to a less riversidey campsite!

Jaynerae · 28/03/2011 22:11

Thanks SanctiMoanyArse, DD adores ice-cream so will head to Beddgelert too.

Ooooh Eisteddfa is great. We drive over for the weekend quite regularly and second all that Lucycat said!

If the weather isn't great there is a Haven site (Hafan y Mor) not far away with a big indoor fun pool that should keep the kids amused for a while.

Jaynerae · 29/03/2011 13:14

Thanks - will keep Haven site in mind aswell!
