What do caravaners do on a Sunday....?

Hi all

finally bought my caravan, stocking it up, looking at site ideas, ready to go....

but the above question still lingers?

We like to go away for the weekend and not come home 'til after tea on the sunday

But on campsites we would obviously need to be off the site with the van by say midday so then we have to go straight home? is this the only option? only other thing I can think of is:

  • I know you can pay some £ to stay for a few more hours, fair enough but you obviously still cant go far
  • pay for another night - again yes maybe but trying to keep costs down - can you get away with offering the site some sort of deal to get to stay until say 6pm if the site is relatively empty
  • I know some sites have places you can leave your van at for a while but not sure how common or if they are usually fully booked up
  • go somewhere where you can take your van for the day - but are there (m)any of these places - I can only think of say country parks with large public car parks, as opposed to ones where parking is restricted

obviously the latter is my preference.... but does the chance really exist and if so how do you find these places!!!

Many thanks for your help..... and hoping

I have done several different things in the past. i have been on sites that let you move the van but onto another area until you are ready to leave (no extra charge). I have parked the van on the local supermarket car park - but left the car attached admittedly so this would only work in certain circumstances. I have also apid for an extra night.

Not terribly helpful - but i agree, yes. It can be a problem.

Hi,
We have found that it all depends on the site and how busy they are. If its out of the main season and the site isn't fully booked we have found that many are happy for you to leave in your own time. In the main season we usually end up having to pay for an extra night if we don't want to leave at lunchtime.

On longer holidays it isn't so much of a problem but weekends are short enough without having to leave by lunchtime (or in some cases 10am!)

Go home the long way Grin

Oblomov · 16/03/2011 21:32

I find that by the time you pack up, roll up the awning and give it a clean etc etc. All whilst trying to keep a 1yr old and 6 yr old occcupied/make sure you haven't accidentally actually rolled up the 1 yr old IN the awning and you get home to realise you've lost something !!!!
YOU are bl**dy cream crackered. and its nearly midday/ past it and you are rushing to get off site.
And the ONLY thing you want to do, is to get home.

Or is thta just us then ??!!

sleepwouldbenice · 16/03/2011 22:20

oh dont put me off.................Grin

so far all the sites I have rung have either said can leave it somewhere on site or can maybe stay on pitch so getting hopeful....

Wasn't trying to put you off. camping is fab. but packing up, especially when you know you have to be off your pitch at a designated time, i.e. time pressured, is hard work.

By the time we are packed, ready to drive home. our site is 1.5 hrs from home. And we generally stop for a fab sunday roast half way home. all that means tired little ones, arriving home mid to late afternoon, time for a bit of this and that, a load of washing on and early bed for us all.

enjoy. but don't expect too much of yourselves, especially the first time.

Can't wait to go on may 1st, for us.

Thanks! we are going somewhere (v close to home) early april

Stopping for a sunday roast sounds like a very good idea.

Be very careful about leaving your caravan hitched up to the car and unattended for any period of time, you may not be insured - check your policy.

I'm sure on our caravan club policy there is a maximum period of time after which you have to have a hitchlock on and possibly also a wheelclamp.

We would generally come home, by the time we've taken the car back to the storage site, unpacked it and put it all away at home, we're ready for a rest, and would probably extend the break by phoning for a take away or going out for dinner near home.

milkybarsrus · 21/03/2011 21:26

we used to do the mad rush to get packed up by midday, but now days we tend to pay for an extra night then we can leave when we want to or most sites let you pay a few quid to stay late anyway.

ivykaty44 · 21/03/2011 21:43

pay and stay late or leave early Monday morning - depending how far you go - we have a few sites within 30 minutes to an hours drive

sleepwouldbenice · 21/03/2011 23:47

Thanks everyone for your thoughts... will have to see if we end up in the "get home asap" or "drag out the holiday for as long as we can" group!Wink
