Children's airbed

I'm looking for an airbed for our 4 year old for his first camping trip. He moves around A LOT in his sleep and so I was thinking about getting one with sides to stop him sliding off.

I was looking at the Kampa one, but a couple of websites say that the product has been discontinued. Does anyone know why? They're still available to buy on EBay, Amazon, etc. but I just wanted to check whether there was any issue (safety/quality) that I should know about.

Has anyone got one or can suggest a good alternative?

DD has one of these Kampa beds. Are they the ones that are being discontinued? I don't have a clue why - the got ours last year and the (camping) shop said they'd stopped stocking ready beds as they had so many returns, but they'd sold a lot of these and never had any back. We've been very happy with ours - and so has DD.

Things to consider, from our experience, would be that it is quite wide so if you have a smallish tent it might not fit very easily. I'd also be consider what you're going to do (if anything) for pillows - DD will be 4 soon and we're wondering if it will be big enough for her by the autumn, although she is quite tall for her age.

Hope you find one for him and he enjoys camping :)

I've never seen those before - they look great! I'm watching this thread too as I need to buy airbeds for all of us. My son who is nearly 3 does not sleep well in a sleeping bag as he gets all twisted up (I don't like them a lot either, especially not for 2 week trip) so we're going to go for single duvets packed in compression sacks for us all and single airbeds too.

We got DD one of these sleeping pods to sleep in - she wriggles around quite a lot but seems quite comfy. (No prizes for guessing which colour!)

Where did you get your compression sacks? I think I must be being blind, but I can never find them and we could do with a couple to stuff our bedding into...

millypip · 05/03/2011 14:46

I was going to get my compression sacks from amazon

www.amazon.co.uk/GELERT-SLEEPING-COMPRESSION-STORAGE-CAMPING/dp/B003F0PYFS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=sports&qid=1299336162&sr=8-1

but you can get them from a few places. (How do you put a link in with other text on top? I'm quite new to this!)

We are notoriously rubbish at travelling light but I am determined to fit all our luxuries essentials into our estate car and roof box. I figured a duvet in a compression sack would hopefully be about the same size as a good sleeping bag.

I bought the children good sleeping bags and my dd (4) sleeps well in hers but my ds (2 nearly 3) hates his.

Have you thought about a ready bed? My youngest DC had one which I then passed on to my niece when he got too big for it. YOu can also use it for people staying the night, too.

funtimewincies · 05/03/2011 18:33

Thanks for the replies. Ds1 already has a ready bed which is an option, although he's very tall for his age and has nearly grown out of it. He's also set his heart on a 'big boy's' sleeping bag Grin.

Never thought to check how long the kampa airbed was, I don't want him to grow out of it too soon Confused.

Meant to say that those are the ones Tangle although I'm hunting around for a better postage deal than Amazon has.

TBH I think he'll be too big - IIRC the internal length of the bed is only 115cm. DD is over 1m and she's not quite 4 yet (although reasonably tall for her age). If your DS is a bit older and also tall I would be worried he's already too big for it :(

Would he be better off with a thinish self-inflating mat? Much harder to fall off as they haven't got the height or the wobbliness of a full-on air bed (I'm lusting after these for the warmth - shame about the budget :o)

Hope you find something :)

(and thanks for the tip on compression sacks - I knew they must be out there somewhere...)

we lay out the "bedroom" floor with 3 self inflating mats (more or less covering all the floor space) and the dc sleep in children's sleeping bags. that way they can move all they want and still be protected from cold and bumpy bits.

Thanks for the feedback. I've just bought a self-inflating mattress from ebay for him so we'll see how that goes. You were right Tangle, he'd have lasted 5 minutes in the Kampa one Grin!
