We haven't been camping yet and thought we'd try a couple of nights on Skye as our first outing. Grin

Can anyone recommend a campsite?

Wow, lots of replies, thank you!

We were thinking about going next month. We're in Edinburgh so it's not that far away - we've been to Skye for a day trip(!) but I was ill so we saw nothing.

Applecross sound very familiar - is it a village up a very scary road? A VERY scary road. I shall google it.

The Dunvegan campsite looks really lovely and I am tempted by there.

It would only be for a couple of days so should be enough to do in the area for that time.

Thanks for all the advice, stories and midge warnings. Grin

We've camped on Skye at Glenbrittle numerous times over the years. Best weather has been in May/early June. There is a lovely beach at Glenbrittle and lots to do pottering around the island, but the weather and the midges can be grim, you want light wind ideally.

If you are that close then you can look at the weather forecast and head north if it looks good.

When it's good it's the most magical place in the world.

PS we chose our tent specifically for Skye. It is big enough to stand up in with midgeproof screens on all the doors and loads of guying points to make it stormproof. If you have children (i.e. cannot run off to the pub in the evening) it's worth thinking about what your "safe haven" will be.

round Easter is when Skye often gets its best weather. And its pre-midge season. Which you'd think people were exaggerating until you experience it. In midge season, its still beautiful, but you need a cottage/house/hotel/escape plan.

hoping to try camping in North Uist this year.

We have decided on the Kinloch campsite - don't need to book for a tent so we can keep an eye on the weather report for the area and head out when it looks good. We HE so don't need to worry about taking our DS1 out of school.

I've taken a note of all the campsites you've all recommened on this thread as hopefully we'll be doing plenty more camping. And I'd rather go somewhere a MNetter recommends than anyone else. Grin

If the weather is good (and we enjoy it!) we might just head to another campsite further north on the mainland, so if anyone knows any more great campsites in Scotland please tell me! Grin

Thanks again for all the help.
