Where is good to camp in Normandy/Brittany?

We are going away the last week of July and would really like to camp in Normandy or Brittany as there are places there we would like to visit (Granville, Bayeux, Mont St Michel, St Malo) and we are hopefull the weather will be beachworthy - unlike Cornwall last August

Our friends who we are travelling with have found a lovely looking site here but it seems very commercial. I think we can use it as a base to explore and it has an indoor pool which would be useful if we had a really grotty day but DH thinks the children wouldn't want to leave the site! The DCs will be 11, 8 and 3.

Does anyone have any advice/suggestions of anywhere good to stay with a tent in this area?

Thanks!

we're going here Have no ideas what it's like but DH has been doing "research" and he seems to think it will be good!

Ooh thanks Tommy, checking it out... Grin

we're going the same week so maybe see you there! Smile

Grin It looks fab! I wasn't quite sure what all the things on the form were for getting a quote (don't speak a great deal of French Blush) but it looks good value, around the same sort of price as the place my friend found. It might be a little far from the places we particularly want to visit though and we were hoping for a beach a bit closer.

Don't want much do we?!

and again?

DuplicitousBitch · 25/02/2011 14:13

this place is like the official mn campsite everyone likes it. v. good beach.

mousymouse · 25/02/2011 14:26

we love Chateau Lez Eaux, between Granville and Mnt St Michel.

mousymouse · 25/02/2011 14:28

oops, I just see that is exactly the one in your first link.

it is a lovely campsite, with few static caravans. the beach is lovely but a little hike away. great playground for the kids and indoor pool in case the weather doesn't keep up. facitities are basic but clean, no chemical toilets.

BeckleinDisguise · 25/02/2011 23:28

Thanks DuplicitousBitch, it looks a gorgeous site but it is probably too far round for us, we really did want to be closer to Granville (and Mont St Michel which I am desparate to visit again - I was 12 last time and loved it!)

Thanks MousyMouse, its great to hear that someone recommends that site! Have you been there more than once? I would have liked to be right on the beach but the website says its 3km away which isn't too bad. I think we will probably choose that one, our friends want to stay in one of their chalets as their smallest DC is a very light sleeper and they don't want to disturb other campers but we're going for a tent Grin I'm all excited now!

mousymouse · 26/02/2011 10:56

we stayed there 2 years ago for 2 weeks in a tent.
they also rent out bikes and trailers and the (very beautiful) beach is really not far away (but too far to walk really).
the place was full when we were there, every plot taken but still did feel calm. plots are separated by hedges and trees so that you don*t feel to be on top of each other.

bigTillyMint · 26/02/2011 10:59

DB We have been to the lovely Raguennes with our friends at least 5 times, but I didn't know it was a MN campsite!Blush

DuplicitousBitch · 26/02/2011 21:17

after we went i saw it mentioned on here a zillion times. it is a great site. we were out of season though

ivykaty44 · 27/02/2011 17:48

I would stay at dol de bretagne as there are two lovely campsites and it is ideal placed for all the above attractions you have stated

millypip · 28/02/2011 19:39

Hi, not sure if anybody is still checking this but we love the area near Carnac in Brittany. We stayed at this campsite with Eurocamp 2 years ago and liked it so much that we are back this year with our own tent. My mother and sister went back last year too!

It's about a 2ish hour drive from St. Malo and when you get there you're surrounded by beaches and the campsite is wonderful. Not very big but very good.

This place was lovely - went pre-DD but I seem to recall they have good facilities for children. If you can get a pitch by the seafront you will have lovely views for your preprandial G&T. A bit off the beaten track though so might not be best placed for your sightseeing.

florencerusty · 01/03/2011 18:02

st Aubin is beautiful

Another vote for chateau Les Eaux here, we went last year with friends and 4 children aged 4, 4, 3 and 18 mths and had a brilliant time. So much so we've already booked again for this year. Can't recommend it highly enough. There's a kid's club as well which is great.

Thank you everyone for all your suggestions! I have booked a campsite near Portbail in Normandy now, it has reasonable prices, pitches for us and chalets for our friends and is not too far from all the places we want to see Smile It doesn't look quite as nice as Chateau les Eaux but is cheaper (particularly for the chalets) and still well situated, it has kids clubs and entertainments and a large outdoor pool if we want to use them although I think we will just use it as a base, its quite close to a gorgeous looking beach!

Kniternator · 09/03/2011 16:34

Chateau les Eaux lovely and really near Cherbourg. Raguenes Plage is beautiful and quiet, my DSs loved it both times we've been.

We are staying in Benodet this year, looking forward to it.

jamaisjedors · 13/03/2011 19:09

ohh portbail is lovely, that whole area is beautiful. It'll be great.
