what five things could you not do without? or, do you lust after?

i've already been brainwashed into a dutch oven... does anyone use one?? if so i'd love some recipes Wink

but what else do i reeeeeeeeeeally need?

I should add, that I am not a camping virgin, we camped all the time when i was little, and we've camped a few times over the last few years but we seem to need to take everything we own with us and I am looking to replace certain things with more user-friendly (smaller) alternatives

and I also just want to peruse camping websites

Wet wipes
Vodka
Matches
Big inflatable bed and a quilt or two!

Lucycat · 22/02/2011 19:25

I have a flattish tupperware type container to keep all cutlery/knives/skewers etc in with a tight lid. Pack any spare space in it with Klippits from Lakeland (or the cheaper version form IKEA that we actually have!)

thisisyesterday · 22/02/2011 19:28

wet wipes, vodka and matches eh? that sounds like a dodgy camping trip! Grin

Hi Lucycat! We are off to the french alps. How about you?

OgreTripletsAreSoCute · 22/02/2011 20:42

THank you Millways will keep my eye open for somethig similar, we usually have cutlery loose in a crate with all the crockery and it is a bit chaotic.

One of my good buys has been a sharp knife in a sheath which is bright red (knife and sheath) makes it very easy to locate in amongst the clutter or if it gets put down outside. They come in all sorts of colours.

Fontsnob · 23/02/2011 11:26

Ha ha, that does sound a little dodgy now you mention it.

Batteryhuman - for once we haven't booked anywhere this year - just going where we fancy probably - as far south as we can manage in 2 1/2 weeks and probably travelling fairly light too.

(off to look at sites in the French Alps Smile)

Guildenstern · 23/02/2011 18:11

Warm hats
Double sleeping bag
Chairs with cupholder
Table for playing cards
Wellysuits for the kids

thisisyesterday · 23/02/2011 19:13

what tables do you all have?

i currenly use a little fold up one that was my Grandparents'! it has stools inside and is fairly small, but quite heavy.
I think I need something slightly larger as there are 5 of us.

are the roll-up ones any good??

OP posts:
MisSalLaneous · 23/02/2011 22:15

I have a roll-up one, but a little square table, so not big family sit-down type. It works for having somewhere higher to put something on, but I find it a bit too rickety for my liking, really. Useful though, and takes up next to no space.

Have no idea if bigger roll-up ones would be more stable, sorry.

PerArduaAdNauseum · 23/02/2011 22:22

bookmarking for table advice please :)

Oblomov · 23/02/2011 22:38

LimeJelly, sorry to boast, but will, coz don't often get chance.
But dh bought a great trailer from e-bay, second hand. was as-new. used it the 3 times we went to our caravan last year. Was so fabarooney. please get one. Fab.

bilblio · 23/02/2011 22:48

Dozer
Wide square bottomed sleeping bag
Blankets (lots of)
Chair with cup rest
Insulated mug - I'm rubbish at remembering to drink a the best of times, and DP is accident prone so all drinks go in these.

Add to that list a tent and my crochet (to make more blankets) and I'm a happy lady :)

We have this table. Nice and sturdy, rolls up to about the size of a camping chair and the storage underneath is handy.
Even better is that they got it mixed up with another table and we got it half price :o We did buy the tent at the same time though so they may well have realised their "error".

thisisyesterday · 23/02/2011 22:49

i suppose i will have to go to camping world and try them out then. hmm
that will be a real hardship for me Wink

OP posts:
QOD · 23/02/2011 22:53

Caravan
TV (with freeview & dvd player)
flushing toilet
oven
cooker
fridge

bilblio · 23/02/2011 23:14

A campervan would be loverly too :o
And DD would love it as Peppa Pig has one.

Cathycat · 23/02/2011 23:25

I won't put 5 things ... but I would say an expensive sleeping bag..... ds sicked all over his sleeping bag last year and dh bought another (very expensive) sleeping bag at 10 o clock at night from the on-site shop. ds had mine, i had the expensive one - it revolutionised my camping life! It is soooo warm and cosy and no one else in this family will ever be told! It is mine now! :)

Nikkid21 · 24/02/2011 08:59

SI mat - nice thick one from Costco
pack of playing cards
kettle
my new cadac grill here
Double duvet

Stase · 24/02/2011 22:58

Myrtle and everything in her.
Thinking about a Cobb this year, and some new camping chairs. Other than that, we're good to go! Parp parp! (Small matter of road tax aside...)

washingmachinefiend · 24/02/2011 23:04

a cadac cooker (all in one grill/bbq/wok its fab!)

ready beds with an extra sleeping bag over the top

head torches

decent knives and forks and plates!

and most important of all cider

washingmachinefiend · 24/02/2011 23:05

just read Nikkid21 is a fan of the cadac too!

Cathycat · 24/02/2011 23:12

Would love a day room tent for the kitchen stuff.

Guildenstern · 25/02/2011 07:17

We have two 'proper' tables, one for the cooker and one for the game of bridge.

Like this: table from Yeomans

They don't take up that much room, really. Not compared to the tent. :)

teenyweenytadpole · 25/02/2011 23:03

Oooh Myrtle looks great. I'd love a camper van, or even a trailer tent, or even a trailer. But DH won't countenance it. He is such a girl.

KarenG · 26/02/2011 12:10

Duvets
Proper pillows
Pizzas cooked in the oven at home for arrival
Good lantern

What I should have had last time was a spare tent. Our last one got ripped to shreds in a gale on a really exposed pitch Blush
