Best portable BBQ to take camping?

It needs to have reasonable cooking space, not those crap little coloured miniature bucket BBQs from Sainsbury's, and not be too bulky to pack in the car, preferably smaller than my full sized steel bucket.
I am tempted by the flat pack 'notebook' style bbqs, but they get bad reviews on Amazon for warping.

we have this one

Well... we had one of the fold flat ones (got it over 5 years ago) and it's not warped... (I was going to suggest it actually). I suppose if you got them really hot (if you're using it as a fire pit/bonfire they could/would warp, or if you don't fold them up properly?? (You do have to fold them a particular way -but once you do it a couple of times you just remember and it's no hassle) We've cooked on it for 5 summers and at least 5 times each summer for weekends and week long trips and found it to be really handy. We've even lent it out to family and friends who needed a more compact grill. (so I'm guessing it's easily had more than 100 meals cooked on it). We got a thick plastic black bag (like a builders rubble bag) to put it in so the coal dust didn't get all over the place. It wonderful to pack in the car...
Besides that I know Weber does small more portable grills (but they're as bulky if not more bulky than a bucket grill).

That's interesting, BebeMoon. Do you know what make yours is? I have just had a look again at the reviews of fold flat ones, and they are mostly damning! But they do make the most sense!

Anyone got a view on these?

Thanks Scurry - am looking for a charcoal one.

Ah we had one of those barrel ones too! We liked it from the stand point of when we had a large group you could use both sides to cook. Which was very very nice! It is bulky in the car and we needed to pack it with foam so it didn't rattle (dh hates rattles in the car) It also could really use the rubble bag to be put in as it's definitely messier than one would like in the car.
I cannot remember the make of the flat one and I'm not at home to be able to find out (and won't be for 5 months yet so that'll be no good for you...but I think from the pictures we might have the adelaide not the hotspot)

bebemooneedsabreak · 21/02/2011 16:10

I do wonder if because we bought the flat pack one such a long time ago maybe they were making them differently? (looking yet again on amazon and other sites I think it actually is the hotspot... the opened bottom/handle when folded is the way we carry ours in the bag)

DeOilyCart · 21/02/2011 17:25

I have gone off the double-barrelled one as bulky in the car isn't good, s thatnk you fo that. I will watch prices on the fold-up ones - the Adelaide looks a bit more robust, and has multi-cooking levels. There is an Outwell one on special offer on some sites that gets a truly terrible review.

We have a notebook BBQ - think it was the Hotspot one. Yes is has warped a little but not enough to make any difference to us (and I do use it as a firepit). Yes the paint has flaked off a bit on the outside and it has very slighty rusted there. I just put a bit of grate blacking on it. One tip I would give you is to put some strong eg Turkey foil on the bottom rack to stop the smaller bits of charcoal falling through. I love the way it folds up and takes up so little room in the boot, makes up for a little bit of rust!

LimeJellyforBrains · 21/02/2011 21:21

I do think it could do with being made of thicker metal though. The Adelaide looks as though it might be.

DeOilyCart · 22/02/2011 11:18

That's helpful, thanks LimeJelly - sounds as if they are fine, I don't care about a bit of warping as ,ong as it can still be used and packed flat, and certainly not about paint.

Glad to be of help, DeOily. It did look sooo beautiful when it was new, I was disappointed when the paint started flaking off but then 'got over myself' Grin and started to view it more as a useful thing than a pretty thing. And I figure, at £20, I have already had more than my money's worth out of it (compared to useless foil jobbies). The flaking is in the middle of the flat sides, it's where the coals have been in direct contact with the metal, so the extreme heat there has - quite understandably - made the paint flake in a patch.

We love this.

Just browsing the boards on UKCamping (like you do...) and came across this thread.

EdgarAleNPie · 23/02/2011 20:14

Can't believe no-one's mentioned the cobb-bbq.co.uk/Cobb!
I haven't got one yet but it is on my wishlist!

We have this one. It’s very cheap and folds up small. Comes with a bag too!

Ski4130 · 22/07/2018 08:57

Cadac Safari Chef. It's fab and ours came with a huge pan that we use a lot too. It folds down really small and comes in a carry bag. Highly recommend it.

Ski4130 · 22/07/2018 08:58

Sorry, ignore me - the cadac's electric, not a portable BBQ.
