first it's tent recommendations, then campsites... now i want an electric coolbox

Ok, will grudgingly admit defeat. Bad about utility tent!

SlubberdeVelcro · 20/02/2011 21:09

It's terrible
[I would do a sad face here except I've given up emoticons for pre-Lent in protest]

Oh dear.

Resist resist resist

Stick to the cool boxes....so much choice, and you do actually need one don't you thisisyesterday.

thisisyesterday · 20/02/2011 21:21

yes, i do really need a coolbox, but they're quite boring compared to storm kettles! and tea is so much nicer than cold milk

thisisyesterday · 20/02/2011 21:22

i do like those dutch ovens, we tend to try and find sites that allow open fires, so would be tres useful!

OP posts:
thisisyesterday · 20/02/2011 21:22

my mum has informed me that they may have an old gas powered fridge somewhere....

OP posts:
MisSalLaneous · 20/02/2011 21:29

Oooh, new blood. Yes, thisisyesterday, Storm kettle is fabulous if you like that kind of site. I also like that it costs nothing to run, so I drink loads of freshly made tea, fill up hot water bottle, etc etc. Oh, and watch it burning, mainly. this is the one we have.

Dutch ovens rather expensive, but lasts a lifetime. My parents have a couple, and if it wasn't as heavy, I'd steal one (they life abroad). Wonder if you could take one as hand luggage, and pretend it's a ironic take on a handbag...

MisSalLaneous · 20/02/2011 21:31

Oh for heaven's sake, live, not life, and an, not a. I need coffee.

SlubberdeVelcro · 20/02/2011 21:31

Hhahahah

I like your style yesterday, already convincing yourself that you need a Kelly kettle and a Dutch oven.

But hey, if you don't need to buy a coolbox now you can spend the money you saved on a kettle.

thisisyesterday · 20/02/2011 21:33

so.... i see some guy selling dutch ovens on ebay with a 1p start price

are all dutch ovens equal? are there certain things i need to look out for?

dp says "it's an iron pot, just buy one already".... i say "but i don't want a shit iron pot"

Do not click on kettle link

SlubberdeVelcro · 20/02/2011 21:35

STOP
STOP FOR THE LOVE OF GOD

Sal you have created a MONSTER

Yesterday, deep breaths now, you really don't need one. it is a great big iron pot.

Have you even got normal pots yet?
Or a bed?

MisSalLaneous · 20/02/2011 21:36

No, hold on, I think you do get rubbish quality ones, and then everything burns or it explodes or you die or something.

Let's do a google first, give me a minute.

MisSalLaneous · 20/02/2011 21:36
Grin
thisisyesterday · 20/02/2011 21:38

hahaha yes, we have everything really.

well, i mean i raided my parents' attic and took all the stuff we camped with when i was little

so now i need nice stuff to replace it with Grin

OP posts:
SlubberdeVelcro · 20/02/2011 21:38

Yes yesterday.

If you buy a Dutch oven you will die in a ball of molten iron ore.

Would you like me to link you some photos of sensible cool boxes instead?

thisisyesterday · 20/02/2011 21:41

i won't!

dp will, i have a very strange habit of making fires go out when i go near them

OP posts:
thisisyesterday · 20/02/2011 21:41

gawd, dp has just told me to look at 3 way fridges now.... must go and google

OP posts:
MisSalLaneous · 20/02/2011 21:46

Well, these regular UK campsite posters bought off ebay and were happy.

From what I can remember, a tight sealing lid and thick cast iron is best, as distributes heat well and don't lose it through lid.

Also, it is essential to treat (or whatever it's called) it with oil and then used empty for the first time, as ensures it doesn't stick. After camping, rub inside with oil before storing. That'll stop it from rusting. Oh, and you can obviously use it at home in oven and on stovetop too, so multi use.

thisisyesterday · 20/02/2011 21:51

dp is looking up portable wind turbines to power small fridges with Hmm

i think he's taking this a little bit too far now

OP posts:
MisSalLaneous · 20/02/2011 21:51

Hahahaha

SlubberdeVelcro · 20/02/2011 21:54

Yesterday your dp sounds worse than you.

Wind turbines indeed.

Yeah yeah yeah Sal. Sounds like a casserole to me, a continental heavy casserole dish.

MisSalLaneous · 20/02/2011 21:58

Ah, but it is, essentially. Just a tough one that you can use directly on (and under) coals, and it's got a handle so you could hang it over a fire if you so wish. And because it's thick cast iron, it distributes heat well, so things don't tend to burn at all.

chipmonkey · 20/02/2011 21:58

thisisyesterday, would you mind asking your dp if he has a secret wife and four sons in Ireland? Only just that my dh was looking up wind turbines last night.....
