I have never been camping in my life

I've never even so much as slept in a tent in the garden and have, for some reason, agreed to go camping in the summer with some friends - IF we can get ourselves sorted and it can be fairly cheap. (Doubtful.)

1 - We have NO knowledge of camping or what we need. Though we might have someone with us who did D of E at school. If she can come.

2 - We are poor students.

But I'm sure we're capable. It'll be like... an adventure. Like the Famous Five or something. "Five set fire to their tent and get eaten by wild animals," probably.

Help?

I forgot, that a plastic water container (the sort that expands as you fill it) would be useful, to save endless visits to the tap. And teatowels.

Thanks everyone. Sorry to be so useless!

I think we have an airbed already. So maybe it would be logical to take that? Also we have a sleeping bag. And perhaps even a tent, according to my brother who did D of E.

D of E friend is going to come I think. So I will take a copy of your lists and combine it with what she has and if it all goes wrong I'll just get in the car and drive to a hotel...

This is a truly stupid question but how do I go about getting to the place? Do we just ring up and book? Is it expensive to hire out a spot? (Are they spots? Patches? Places In Which One Pitches A Tent?) Whereabouts should we go? How do we decide which field is best?

With regard to booking a pitch, I would advise booking in advance. You can Google various campsites, then either book online or phone up.

Look at the websites (most campsites have one) and look at the various facilites etc they have. then you can make a more informed choice. I don't think they are terribly expensive, but don't know current prices.

It is always colder than you expect in the evenings. Take layers!
Where will you go camping?
www.ukcampsite.co.uk is useful starting point. You can look for only sites with toilets and showers...

Not sure yet mybabywakesupsinging. I'm thinking Cornwall but someone told me it will be really expensive? We'd like to have a beach nearby, definitely, but that obviously doesn't narrow it down much seeing as we are an island...

Pop up tents are quick to put up
but can be a devil to put down again-
practice

airbeds - good keep you off the grond and comfier tha the ground

google campsites to find out cost of pitch it can vary enormously
as can availability in high season
some charge per person, some charge per tent
some will include hot water and showers in the price
some have cooking facilities
some will have pubs/restraunts nearby- I prefer them Grin

will you have a car or be using pubilc transport?

ratspeaker · 11/02/2011 16:51

and dont forget the lashings and lashings of ginger beer

ComeAlongPond · 11/02/2011 18:16

We'll have a car ratspeaker, mine is fairly small but has lots of storage space in unlikely places so we'll take that and possibly another car too depending how many people are coming.
