La Garangeoire/ Dol de Bretagne?

DH, me and 3-year old DD are wanting to go to one of these in June (one Vendee, other Brittany).
Has anyone been to either offering advice?

I see a number of companies book both sites - my current favourite is La G.

We want a mobile home. Can anyone advise who is best to go through? I want as much 'luxury' as possible e.g. dishwasher if possible and space but only need 2 bedrooms.

Are some of the homes better than others and pitches bigger than others depending on who you book with? Can DD go to the childrens clubs whatever or are they specific to company booked through? As you can see I have so many questions and being a mobile home booking virgin I am quite bewildered by the variety on offer!!! All advise will be SOO welcome!

Have been to Dol de Bretagne and other sites in the Vendee - Dol de Bretagne is huge - I felt it was too big for us as a young family - better suited for older children imo. Think you'd probably have better weather in the vendee as well.

La G was one of my favourites on paper but we haven't yet made it that far down!

Childrens clubs are specific to the company you book with.

re: mobiles - I think the mobiles for eurocamp/keycamp etc are pretty much the same so no real difference between the companies - that said - matthews vans are very basic - but v cheap.

hope that helps?

I have been in June to france but no dc clubs seem to run this early in the season - though perhaps the sites I visited where not doing them, though have been to vendee and Dol de B at this time. Found Vendee bit soleless in June TBH and have been their in August when much better as holiday place.

Loved Dol de B itself and we stayed on family run site 2km out of town.

Can't say about accomodation etc as we have travelled in caravan and motorhome so not applicable.

this is where we stayed in Dol

Thanks you ivykaty44 and paarrp for your insights. It is really tricky. I am certain La G is my favourite at the mo but have a husband who will play golf given the choice (hence Dol de B).
As for clubs both Eurocamp & Kaycamp appear to offer their clubs in June so I guess they will need to be the ones if DD wants to do that a little bit.
Also, does anyone know specifics of the pitch spaces per company - some people seem to say some companies offer better space than others and I do not know which.

I think Dol is better for younger dc just because there are more towns really nice towns to be visiting when dh is playing golf Grin St Malo is lovely, Dinar and Dinha are both great and there are things like St Michales mont and the aquarium to visit from Dol

The vendee is great for sun, sea and sand, Vannes is a pretty town

The one thing I do remember about the pool in Dol is that it was cold (we went in June) - don't know if that helps with your decision?!

The toddler clubs are crafty type things or tumble tots and you will need to stay with your dd to supervise her. They'll definitely be running in June.

we've been to dol a couple of times and la garangeoire once.

la garangeioure is probably one of top couple of sites we've been to in france and we've visited 10 or so. canvas and thompson had best pitches. canvas didn't have kids club. further to travel to and we didn't like vendee much, though weather more reliable than northern brittany. no kidies club with canvas. try not to travel down on a sat

dol is large campsite. bit of treck to beaches. we prefer brittany as its more like cornwall without crowds or tat. interesting towns nearby. pools nice.

have to go on call now, post any specific questions and i'll try and answer.

Not overly keen on Dol when we went there. It's huge, the evening entertainment was very loud (we went end of august) and the pool was freezing. Lots of loud teenagers roaming in packs past midnight. However we were in a tent so you may not notice the noise so much in a static.

Went to camping de la baie in southern Brittany last May half term. Fantastic family site, quiet with a warm pool and excellent beach over the road. Don't know about local golf though.

Went to La G last year - DS1 was 3 and a half and loved it, but to be honest I think its slightly better for slightly older children (maybe 5 years onwards). Stayed in a mobile home - which was fine, except for the bed being the most uncomfortable one I've ever slept on. Lots of lovely stuff to do around that area. The top tip I had (started a thread last year asking about top tips once we'd booked La G) was to go for the biggest place you can afford - we did and its a good thing we did as had a couple of dodgy weather days when it was cold out and the little ones didnt want to play outdoors till it warmed up.

We've booked 2 weeks at the end of June/start July at La Garangeoire, after a recommendation from friends. We booked through Les Castels, as they were also recommended to us by the same friends who have used them several times (I think possibly they own the site, but I'm not sure). We also found that their availability was better (we wanted a mobile home too, but couldn't get what we wanted through Canvas or Thomson at that site in the weeks we wanted). I don't think their children's club or the free babysitting (!) start until July though.

HTH, and maybe see you there!

KTB1234 · 08/02/2011 22:14

Thank you all!!!!
I have finally done it - La G is booked for just over a week from 9th June. I booked with Keycamp in the end as they provide a dishwasher and a relatively big mobile and they have childrens clubs running in June, which whilst dd may not want to be there every day I am keen she can 'play' with other children as she is an only one.

I accept the pitch may not be the best but this will be our first family 'camp' (husband always used to do caravans, I used to always do tents) so we will just go with it and see how we like it (or not). Thank you for all the really positive and useful advice - it definitely helped me.
