How early in the year do you brave it and if you are someone who goes camping in "cooler" conditions how do you cope? WIll be going with a7 year old.

I think I've heard of people going in March. I guess you just have a lot of layers and as many people in the tent as possible, lots of body heat.

Whit BH.

upahill · 31/01/2011 15:36

Go all year. However it has to be said my family don't always join me and I have had problems pursuading friends as well.

So often I go by myself!

Batteryhuman · 31/01/2011 16:42

Often at easter. Have had frost but beautiful night skies. hot water bottles and blankets essential.

Asteria · 31/01/2011 17:02

I would say Easter too - take tonnes of blankets! I don't "do" sleeping bags at all - hate them - so go for the double air mattress with duvet underneath me and at least 2 duvets on top. It's so cosy and far nicer than being trussed up in nylon!

DuplicitousBitch · 31/01/2011 17:37

easter, have thought abuot sooner but tis madness.

spent one freaky easter, wild camping in ardnamurchan and baked. we swam in the sea and everything.

SlubberIsNotGettingEHU · 31/01/2011 18:33

That sounds lovely DB.

Every year I think we should just go for it and every year I chicken out and book a holiday cottage instead.

Maybe this is the year. I bought a microfleece base layer top and long johns set today in TK Max [alluring]

Lucycat · 31/01/2011 18:42

We camped in Scotland that freaky Easter too - we borrowed a friend's tent as we'd planned on staying with them and then the weather was sooo gorgeous that we camped instead. On the banks of Loch Ken in Dumfries and Galloway, we woke up to the red kites circling overhead.

Otherwise Whit BH for us too - I'm nesh Grin

lulu2 · 31/01/2011 18:45

we camped last year in May and it was freezing at night. Lovely in the day but needed extra blankets and hot water bottles too.

SlubberIsNotGettingEHU · 31/01/2011 18:52

lol I'm nesh too Lucy (love that word)

lulu yy last May was fricking freezing Mr Bigglesworth. Hats, ALL the fleeces and all the socks in situ at night. Wonderful during the day though.

RantyMcRantpants · 31/01/2011 18:54

Thinking about going at the end of Feb this year. Not 100% yet but erring on the side of going. Would it be mad?

Otherwise we start in April.

SlubberIsNotGettingEHU · 31/01/2011 18:57

Isn't it a bit well dark Ranty, in February

What do you do in the evenings? Or are you all old enough to read by yourselves or go to the pub until late?

PlanetEarth · 31/01/2011 19:04

Have been at Easter, perishing at night. The worst thing is not the sleeping (if you're well prepared) but the evenings, or going to the loo before bed. But then I feel like this in summer too, it's rarely warm enough for me to want to sit outside in the evening. Not very helpful, sorry!

RantyMcRantpants · 31/01/2011 23:39

We have a lovely thing called EHU Grin and an oil filled radiator and lights :)

If we do go then it will be to some where where we are out all day, so we won't get back to camp till late and then the kids would go to bed not as soon as we get in but they are not up for long as they are knackered.

SlubberIsNotGettingEHU · 01/02/2011 11:34

[raspberry @ EHU]

mmm am thinking about Easter as it's quite late this year isn't it.

RantyMcRantpants · 01/02/2011 11:40

pmsl Grin

Yeah, end of April with the Royal Wedding tagged on the end.

We were planning to go to London camping then. So glad I was disorganised and didn't get round to booking it.

My late teen son is talking about going camping this weekend!
Last year he was up the Pentland in January, 3/4 season sleeping bag and campfires.

mybabywakesupsinging · 06/02/2011 22:51

ds2 wanted to go in January but he is 3 and foolish. I think he fancied a beach trip as well.
I have a > 10 degrees at night rule, but might be a bit careful while dd is still tiny.

Nikkid21 · 08/02/2011 16:47

Easter last year but it was freezing and not that enjoyable to be honest. Felt like hard work.
This year we are camping on the wedding bank holiday weekend. But we're off to a site that allows campfires so that we can be warm and toasty around it.
