Any campsite recommendations for near Edinburgh?

Does anyone have any recommendations for campsites near Edinburgh please? Hoping to go in late May, with dd's who are 4 and 2. We like not using the car, so near a bus or train station that could take us into the city would be ideal. Any other tips or suggestions are very welcome. Thanks in advance.

We stayed on the Caravan club site which is a few miles outside of Edinburgh this Christmas and I have to say it was really good. The toilet blocks were clean with loads of free hot water, the pitches were big (they had a special tent field) and they had a shop and information centre. They also had a dog walk on site and it was within walking distance of a huge Morrisons and Tesco.
There was a bus which went to the city centre from almost outside the site and the best bit was that as you crossed the road outside the site you were on the promenade which looked over the firth of forth (amazing views any time of the year).
You can find details on the Caravan club website and you don't need to be a member to book.

The site Notbyalognchalk is talking about is Silverknowes, it's lovely there.

Also good for walks along the prom but not really a beach for playing on although there is some ok parts, it's a lovely walk along to Crammond and depending on the tide you can walk over to Crammond Island.

a bus runs daily from the site or walk along the road a bit to get a Lothian bus. Also only a 10 minute drive to a swimming pool (Ainslie Park leisure center)

Nothing on site though if your looking for entertainment.

You could also try Port Seaton, I stayed in a caravan there (holiday) and they also have pitches, there's entertainment, swimming pool etc and a good bus service into Edinburgh.

Mortonhall Campsite is on the southern outskirts of Edinburgh
Frogstone Road East
Theres a bus ( 11 ) goes past the entrance should take you into town centre.

It has a bar onsite, walks around it,
a shop, laundry etc etc
Had relatives staying there in a static van in December

Thanks for the suggestions. I am going to have a look at them now, and hopefully make some decisions. Thanks again.

Second mortonhall

I've heard that this site is nice. Just outside Musselburgh, which is not far from Edinburgh. There is a regular bus service within a few minutes walk and the journey the centre of Edinburgh would be no more than half an hour at non busy times.

i was just going to recomend drum mohr.
quiet, friendly and as another person posted has a dog walk and also great views of the firth and forth.

i camped there for my first time last june and realie enjoyed.

easy getting into edinbourgh or also if you would rather travell the other direction towards north berwick.

its in a town called prestonpans, there is butterfly world, splash land or even if you dont want to spend much money you could trek for miles.

ratspeaker · 29/01/2011 23:26

Butterfly World isn't in Prestonpans it's between Dalkeith and Edinburgh on the Gilmerton Road, at Dobies garden Centre

There's a campsite out near Newtongrange, Lothian Bridge
not sure about the buses that go past there
the 3 and 29 may go nearby.
Its got big tesco up the road at Hardengreen

ratspeaker · 29/01/2011 23:32

Its a Haven Holiday park at Port Seton, i think any prices for tents will be dearer as they'll include passes for their facilities

loveydovey · 31/01/2011 00:20

oh excuse my grammer. what i ment was drum morh is advertised as being in musselbourgh but is in fact closer to prestonpans.

the bus stop outside seaton sands and they are regular straight into town for a few pounds.

seaton sands is nice but very over priced, the shop is also very expensive, lovely chip shop though.
