Yippee, I now have fuel for my Cobb! What shall I cook first?

Managed to get to Lakeland and get a pack of Cobblestones. (Got Cobb for Xmas but nowhere sells bbq briquettes at this time of year apparently.)

I haven't got a chicken. Some bread perhaps?

You can cook anything on your Cobb except....

meringues might be tricky.

What do you fancy? BBQ stuff? A nice curry in the wok? Roast veggies? A roast with trimmings?

how about salmon fillet?

cauliflower is divine done in foil with butter, seasoning, and bunged in the moat.

actually - what do you have in? that might be easier than us all suggesting random stuff Grin

shhh not a salmon fillet. seth is most passionate about the Fish Fight petition. A nice piece of dab or pollock in foil perhaps? Grin

I think bread is advanced cobbing (cobbery?) tbh.

i take it you will be eating whatever you cook outside. it wont taste as good if you bring it indoors.

Roast beef, with yorkshire pud and trimmings. that's what we did anyway, in a field in Pembrokeshire.

NOT popcorn, from experience. Never bloody popcorn.

A nice bit of mackerel does well.

hey all. thanks for suggestions. Those cobblestones are metaphorically burning a hole in my pocket.

haven't done anything yet - looks like tomorrow's lunch will be Cobbed.

rofl @ 'not bloody popcorn'. My mind is at least half boggled.

I've made dh eat fish twice this week so maybe we should do a selection of burgers and bbq style veg. Kids could help me make kebaby things.

Silverfrog - can you tell me more about this cauliflower? Do you put it in the foil totally raw? How long does it take? Do you put any liquid in there?

I am half inclined to wait till Mon and just experiment when dh isn't there, but I can always do something tomorrow and then something else on Monday.

Slubber is going to do a meringue some time this year, and I am going to do a souffle, once I'm good at it. It will be the Great Mumsnet Ridiculous Camping Cuisine Challenge.
Is anyone else in? Peachy? If you can do roast beef etc you must be a highly skilled Cobber.

cauliflower goes in raw.

no liquid in with the cauli, but liquid in moat, depending on what you are cooking as a main, iyswim. so maybe some white wine for a chicken.

so, chop cauli bits quite small - they have ot make a long flat-ish parcel to wind around the moat.

nice slab of butter (we use goat's butter, as dh is cow's milk intolerant, which is salted), and salt/pepper to taste.

fold up the foil as per cobb instructions (can never remember which way round the foil goes, but you need the reverse of normal use, so that the heat is absorbed rather than reflected - it says in the cobb book), and then pop it in the moat for 35 mins or so.

even if you get the timings hopelessly wrong, and end up with mushy cauliflower, it still tastes marvellous.

I am a cauliflower fan anyway, but this is one of the best ways of eating it ever

same method for asparagus, and even that tastes good (and normally I can take or leave asparagus)

butterfly chicken (from the Cobb book) went on at 1.20 and I have some rolls rising to go in after it if there is any Cobblestone left.

resisting temptation to keep lifting lid and looking at it.

it billowed out smoke when I first lit it and I was Shock (as one of the reasons for getting it is not creating lots of nasty smoke on campsites) but once I put the chicken in it slowed to a trickle.

You can only do rolls in a Cobb, nothing else would work.

ok well the chicken came out and I've nibbled a few bits round the edges which are indeed succulent and delicious as well as crispy and barbecuey. BUT there seem to be pink bits and I can't work out if this is just because some chickens do have pink bits (only not usually this many, but it's a cheaper chicken than we normally get) or if it's not cooked. Juices ran clear. Pink bits are near the edges rather than the middle bits that I would expect to be undercooked. So I've bunged it in the oven so be extra safe/see if they go white.
(It's for dinner tonight, cold with salad.)

Rolls are in and I have been peeping through holes; can smell nice baking bread smell.
