Debating it but whats it like and where have you stayed? We normal camp but dh is a bit camp shy and prefers a nice house to stay in but they seem pricey this summer so im looking for a cheaper alterantive in wales/ ayrshire or devon/ cornwall or such like or even isle of wight if there is anywhere.....

We haven't camped in a yurt since we had DD, but we had before and plan to as soon as possible. They're remarkably spacious - more like a proper room than a tent - and if you have a stove in, they stay warm really well.
That said, I'll report back once we've actually stayed in one with DD.
(We've never yurt-camped in the UK so I can't recommend a place here.)

we stayed at plan-it earth down in Cornwall and it was really lovely!
wasn't cheap though

We've stayed at Barefoot Yurts and York Yurts - both were fabulous. The first was more expensive so probably not an option if you want to save money, but it is extremely romantic and totally secluded - you get both yurts to yourself.

Have a look at the Go Glamping link above though, there are a couple of yurt options on there.

We've stayed in yurts before as I hate sleeping in tents, though DH is a keen camper. They tend to be roomy, and stay at a comfortable temperature. I loved having a solid floor! I've not been in one that leaked and you can't say better than that.

Yorks not to far from us but it all looked vary based on romance and we are taking a 4 and 8 yr old, they look sooooo lovely but i still need to amuse the kids a fair bit - featherdown farm look good but £megas - i can find a nice house for a week for £750 peak summer hols so am thinking around £450 or even £150 ish for 2 nights so we can use to break up a long trip dorn soooth. If its to expensive dh will go for thehouse opiton.

My sister and her dh stayed in a yurt in Portugal and it was so ropey they lied about a 'family emergency' so that they could scarper to a hotel.

I've stayed in a Teepee down in Cornwal "Cornish Tipi holidays" back in 2000 when they were MUCH cheaper.
We had a little robin that visited us each morning and he would sing at the top of the tipi.
He used to come through the gap at the bottom.
We used a gas cooker to keep warm but had lots of free firewood for the fire outside.

Back in October 2009 we had a holiday in a Yurt "Strawberry skies" in mid Wales and that was great.
On the last day 01st November, there was torrential rain and it did get a big noisy inside the yurt, but it was lovely and cozy Smile.

Tipis for summer and Yurts for Spring, Autumn and winter.

Well i saw some tipis on the isle of wight for something daft like £260 for a week with ferry crossing - are they alot cooler then being so tall? it said camp bed for tipi provided but i imagine this must be some dodgey low camped metal canvass covered jobby . I want top notch luxury for bargain price Grin

We stayed in a yurt on the Isle of Wight last year. It was fantastic - king sized bed, double futon that the DC's shared (were 3 and 20 months at the time) - and there was a spare fold up single too. We went at end of season (late Sept I think) and were incredibly toasty with our wood burning stove etc. I'm not sure it was that much cheaper than hiring a holiday cottage, but we'll definitely do it again this year.

goodmanners · 06/01/2011 21:53

see i love the iow and dc want to go there again this yr but we were in a nice house last yr so a tadge spoilt. Was there anything for dc to do on the site ont he iow?

The site was on an apple orchard on the IOW (the really green holiday company) and there was a communal teepee which had a sofa, dining area, some books/games. It was a 2 min drive to the beach and we'd take bikes next time. So no actual 'play area' but loads of space to play in ifyswim. There were I think 5 or 6 yurts but because of the orchard you had lots of privacy too. There is a farm shop on site that I believe you can get breakfast at in season if you fancy a morning off cooking. Also in the communal tent they filled flasks with boiling water and had gas barbecues so that you had the choice of cooking on your own stove or BBQ, or using the communal tent if in a hurry.

goodmanners · 06/01/2011 22:03

Oh you lucky duck - i have just been looking at that site.

We stayed in a tipi for our Honeymoon (we went to a festival for the weekend.) We're used to camping so took our own sleeping bags, mats etc but the company put down mats as well as some sheepskin runs and flowers as an extra treat.

It was an 8 man, so HUGE but really warm. It was quite cold outside at night but the tipi had warmed up during the day so when we got inside the heat hit us. It was lovely.

I'd certainly go again, particularly for a festival because we were in our own area with other tipis and there was a big open area in the middle. Much better than where all the tents were with everyone camped on top of each other.

I've had this site recommended to me for camping pods, and the recommendee's kids were 4 & 8 - they went for Bonfire Night & raved about the place. Prices look v.reasonable.

goodmanners · 09/01/2011 13:32

Ahh yes pods, we stayed in one overnight last year a 4 person one for 2 ads and 2 dc foucd it v clotrophobic on a night though would not rule out again as barganius and excellent to break up our journey - id defo try and get a 5/6 berth one though for extra breathing room.
