Agressive campers and avoiding the places they go to?

We went camping in Wales last year and it was beutiful but ruined on the last couple of days by the family from HELL who camped near us. They were horrendous...swearing, drinking, their boys were out all day and night taking other peoples things...and they were very small to be unattended so long...the couple were intimidating and unfriendly to other campers and as it was a very small field you couldn't get away from them.

When we had arrived, the guy in charge said that it was a family site and they would not put up with any noise after 10.00pm...but this family were playing loud music until gone midnight....and no staff appeared to stop them. One other camper yelled out at around midnight to turn the racket off and was met with a barrage of abuse.

Is this normal? Ive not been camping for years and the experience put me off...didn't feel safe at all...are there any nice sites with proper security? I would like to go to Cornwall this year really....

Sorry to hear it but it does sound like you've had an unusual experience there. Definitely not normal.

Tons of sites in Cornwall. I wouldn't aim for a place with security, I'd be wondering why they needed it in the first place.

WimpleOfTheBallet · 02/01/2011 20:06

I did hope it was not the norm and don't want those idiots to ruin our future fun...so will look for places which are C&C only...I don't think this one was tbh. We're novices and never thought about that.

When I first started camping with kids I would only go to C & C sites for this reason.

Because they have no clubhouses, they tend to attract campers who like it quiet in the evenings. Have never had problems on a C & C site.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 02/01/2011 20:15

I don't know if ours ahve been C&C but yes to avoiding places with clubhouses.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 02/01/2011 20:16

Have you tried the UK Camping website? Loads of reviews for campsites. In the UK. Natch Grin

There are too many sites now where yobbish behaviour is tolerated and noise goes on too late. We went to an awful site in Northumberland a year or too ago which was ruined by inconsiderate noise.
Definately look at the review sites and post if you've had a bad experience.
I've certainly found that if you go further afield, the sites are less noisy - we had a fabulous time at a really big site in the Highlands last year. The C&C club are probably a good bet as they have strict accreditation - Mumsnet also a font of advice for recommended sites.

Beamur · 02/01/2011 20:21

Sorry about my spelling!

SixtyFootDoll · 02/01/2011 20:56

We went here last Summer. It was a fantastically clean well run site and their no noise rules were strictly enforced, it was sooo peaceful.

If the weather had been better I might go back again!

mrspercival · 02/01/2011 21:22

sixtyfootdoll thanks for site recommendation as I've just posted a request for Cornish site suggestions
I'm a big fan of quiet sites in the evening and tend to avoid the places with bars. I'll alos take a look at C&C sites, I've never thought about them before.

There is no bar/ club on that site mrs p which is why I chose it

Gets booked up quite quickly too, with a lot of repeat bookings whcih i think says a lot.
The site owner 'shoos' all the kids out of thee play area at 9pm( and locks it up)!

WimpleOfTheBallet · 02/01/2011 21:57

There was no bar or clubhouse on the one we were at....there were only showers etc...the "Missing Link Family" as DH and I christened them were well set up...own portaloo and good equipment...so they were obviously regular campers..they were just horrendous...I suppose it was a just a bad experience.

Thanks for the tips and link!

I agree you were unlucky. We are in the C+C too, but use lots of other sites and have never had things as bad as you describe.

Better luck this year!

oranges123 · 05/01/2011 10:47

Also if you have a particular site in mind, you could look at the reviews on www.UKcampsite.co.uk. The reviews people put on may give you an idea as to how seriously the owners of a particular site enforce their rules. It's not foolproof but it might help.

DuplicitousBitch · 05/01/2011 11:09

i don't really rate ukcampsite, they have never put up any of my negative reviews

truffleshuffle · 05/01/2011 11:13

I went to a lovely campsite last summer that is families only and no dogs.

The site has a lovely clubhouse, pool, soft play, launderette etc. We meet lots of people whilst we were there that had been going for years.

That was in Cornwall and hopefully fingers crossed we will be going again this year.

There was no trouble while we were there at all, very family orientated.
