Brittany - North or South?

Millimat · 30/12/2010 21:05

Ok so we have decided to get ferries booked but due to extortionate costs for taking a caravan are going to be driving from Calais. Looking for a recommended campsite in the Brittany area. Dcs are 4 and 7 and not into anything too lively, but need at least a pool, decent play area etc, and close to a beach.
Can someone please tell me where to go?!! Thanks

We loved La Letty, near Benodet. No pool but next to private beach, very very child-friendly, nice spotlessly toilets & showers with special family-only bathrooms. Our kids still talk of La Letty fondly. We didn't miss a pool at all.

Loads to see & do in Benodet and nice beaches.

raguennes is on the larger side but beach and pool are great

dreamingofsun · 02/01/2011 13:30

les deux fontaines same area as raguennes

carnac area is also nice - we've been to la grand metairie but this might be bit busy for you.

have you looked at ukcampsites.co.uk

chateau des ormes - kids always enjoyed as lots to do - but is large

Millimat · 02/01/2011 20:17

I like the look of chateau des ormes, it was n a shortlist, but would prefer something a bit quieter - i think we would be paying for a lot of facilities that we wouldn't use.
Is there any difference in weather between the north and south of brittany?

south can be warmer. sea is wee bit warmer

Millimat · 03/01/2011 09:19

Thought it might be. I like the look of those sites on the other post (de la baie or la plage) but they would be £40 a night with our own caravan, which seems very expensive?

you should spend a few nights in municipal campsites to even out the cost. our campervan was ?11 a night in a municipal with a lovely pool last year.

serin · 04/01/2011 13:22

Sorry to hijack but do you have a link for those municipal sites Duplicitous? We are also driving from calais to brittany due to ferry costs, however I am not sure that we will save much with road tolls! Are you planning a stop over half way Millimat or are you just going to sldier on?

serin · 04/01/2011 13:28

Caravan club do a good brochure of recommended sites which they will post out to you free but you cannot access it online yet.

Les Capucines
Les Mouettes
Village de la plage
Les pres verts

all look good and are bookable online, you will have to google for yourself though as I have no time to be setting up liks today!

Went here (in the north - fairly near Caen IIRC) pre-DD and it is in a lovely setting - try and get a pitch by the sea if you go there.

DuplicitousBitch · 04/01/2011 16:38

here is the site i was talking about. not most interesting area but good stopover

Lizzylou · 04/01/2011 16:43

L'Atlantique in Beg Meil is lovely, nice pool, good playground, our 6 and 4 yr olds loved it. Huge beach just a 5min walk through a nature reserve. We've booked again for next, no this year.
It is very close to Benodet, which I agree is lovely, we visited there a lot.

Millimat · 04/01/2011 19:31

Serin - we went to Normandy a few years ago when DD was just months old, but never made it as far as the very western beaches - DH likes all the WW2 stuff, so we wondered about doing a stopover in Caen for a couple of days on the way across. Going back via Paris - DCs are desperate to see the Eiffel Tower Confused

Love the look of that municipal site - just need one like that on the other side of Paris!!!

Have been to les ormes three times now. It is a large site but kids loved it. My 2 youngest were 4 and 7 when we went last. They loved the covered pool - brilliant if the weather isn't so great. Good kids clubs - canvas holidays had the best activities for families.
they also enjoyed the pony rides and pedaloes on the lake.

St Malo Aquarium was a good day out.

Millimat · 11/01/2011 14:28

Just looking at sites near Pornic - can anyone recommend one in that area?
